Selma City Council President George Evans has announced his intention to seek the mayor&8217;s office this year.

And with that announcement Monday at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the political season in the city kicked off..

If you live in the city and are not registered to vote, it&8217;s time to go to the courthouse and fill out the forms to cast a ballot in the primaries in August.

This newspaper will carry information on each of the candidates. But it is up to the voters in the community to keep up with information about the candidates.

Educate yourselves.

Ask questions about candidates. Look at their past records, which are predictors of future performance; and attend rallies or meetings to see if you can find out more.

Remember, the candidates are attempting to get elected or re-elected. Sometimes, the truth gets lost in the rhetoric or the passion of the moment.

Hold them close to the truth, so you&8217;ll become a better informed voter.
