Selma didn’t get the big run Saturday to convincingly put away winless Southside.

Instead, the Saints (5-1) kept pounding away and eventually gave its home fans reason to brag – and still enough reason to hit the exits early.

Wendell Lewis led all scorers in the game with 21 points, and Selma won the first meeting of the year between the two teams 60-37.

“We’re off to a great start,” Selma coach Willie Maxey said. “This is the first time in a quite a while I have a team that can go 12 to 13 deep and be pretty comfortable with what I have.”

Point guard Jakobe Shannon slashed his way to 13 points for the Saints.

Jerel Peoples led the Panthers (0-9) in scoring with 18 points, and the next highest scorer was Marcus Ishman with seven.

Southside never led in the game, and Selma began pulling away from a close contest as the first quarter closed. The Saints went on a 13-0 run that ran from the 2:21 mark of the first to the 5:45 mark of the second. They led 22-8 at that point.

Southside has normally had its best offensive showings while behind in the fourth quarter, but that wasn’t so Saturday.

Selma wiped faint hopes of a comeback by going on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 60-35 with 1:18 left to play.
