A manageable deficit Saturday turned into a pile of points the Wallace-Selma women’s basketball team couldn’t dig out from under.
The Shelton State Buccaneers held the Patriots scoreless for six minutes early in the second half and used that as a springboard for an 83-52 win.
The loss for the Patriots came in their home opener of the 2007-08 season.
During that stretch, Shelton State scored 17 points and jumped out to a 68-37 lead.
The bleeding finally stopped when WCCS guard Joyce Jones hit a 3-pointer that started a 9-2 run. But the Patriots were still down 70-46 at that point.
Guard Lauren Tucker, who scored all 12 of her points in the second half, hit a pair of 3-point shots to spark the Bucs’ offense.
Shelton State turned around what started out to be a close game.
Forward Jacques Parks hit back-to-back layups to give WCCS its biggest lead of the night at 8-5.
Midway through the first half Shelton State went on a 13-2 run that gave the team a 25-21 lead, and it never trailed again.
