Tonya was one of three athletes from the state of Alabama to be selected to be part of Special Olympics team USA.
The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games
held in Shanghai China was the largest sporting event held in the world this year.
Tonya wore her three medals around her neck that she won in Shanghai, a bronze third place for shot-put, a fifth-place medal in the 100 meter relay and a sixth-place finish in the 100 meter run.
Commissioner Albert Turner of Perry County declared Nov. 2 Tonya Pitts
and Uniontown Mayor Phillip White presented her with a giant stuffed bear and certificate saying it was a great day for Uniontown.
For Tonya, who until recently had never been further from Uniontown than Selma, traveling around the world was even more exciting.
Tonya returned from China Oct. 13.
She has been competing in Special Olympics competitions for nearly a decade, but she has been involved for nearly a decade.
