Still struggling in their first season, the Wallace-Selma volleyball team suffered a sweep at the hands of visiting Wallace-Hanceville Tuesday night.

The Lions dominated the middle of the court and got a strong game from outside hitter Lauren Simmons to take wins of 30-12, 30-10, 30-10.

LaKeisha Jackson led a brief scoring run that cut the Patriots’ deficit to eight points in game one.

But Hanceville answered, and Jessica Young and Alisha McClendon threw down kills to sustain a seven-point rally that gave Hanceville a 23-7 lead.

Later on, Shanetta Craig served three aces as part of a string of four unanswered points that made it a 28-12 game. But the Lions took the ball back – ending what turned out to be the longest run of the night for the Patriots – and scored twice to close out the opening game.

The Lions’ defense stepped up and took over the second game, holding WCCS to just three points on service. Lauralee Bishop extended the lead to 22-6 with a seven-point service run.

Simmons had five aces in the final game, and Wallace’s offense didn’t have much more luck.

Hanceville had a 20-5 lead at one point and then finished out the match.
