Lions Sight provides free checks for 6th graders

The boost from a grant has given local students the opportunity to get free vision and hearing screenings.

Alabama Lions Sight, with the help from a Johnson & Johnson grant, is providing the screening to all sixth grade students throughout the Black Belt.

About 180 students from the School of Discovery went

through the screening process on Wednesday, organizers said.

Members of the Lions Club of Selma provided volunteer support to the operation on Wednesday morning.

Alabama Lions Sight will conduct the screenings throughout the Black Belt, even in areas that do not have a local Lions Club, Guest said.

In 1998, The Mobile Screening Unit was established to travel throughout Alabama and screen school children for visual acuity, muscle balance, and hearing, as well as screen communities for visual acuity, glaucoma, diabetes, blood pressure and hearing.
