The “Big Cheese” will make its annual stop at Selma Mall this Wednesday, bearing uniforms to families in need at the Selma City School Uniform Giveaway.
Now in its fourth year, the giveaway has helped 420 area families, said organizer Lorraine Capers. Approximately 3,000 uniforms will be transferred on a school bus from the Phoenix School to Selma Mall, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We’re expecting a huge turnout,” said Capers, adding several people have called her inquiring about the giveaway. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s well worth it.”
Wallace Community College Selma Talent Search, C.H.A.S.M., S.C.O.P.E., the Department of Human Resources and Selma Steam Laundry are assisting the city schools in the effort, picking up uniforms from donators, sorting them and cleaning them.
Capers also credited the Freedom Foundation, which raised $600 for the giveaway at its Old School vs. New School Selma Basketball Shootout. The money was used to purchase more uniforms.
“We’re very excited this year,” Capers said. “I’m excited about the community interest in this – their commitment and dedication.”
On Saturday, Capers and a few volunteers distributed flyers to area churches alerting congregations of the giveaway. The giveaway has also been publicized on the WHBB and WBFZ radio stations.
Capers said she accepts uniform donations year round and stores them at the Phoenix School, located at 501 Plant St. Those interested may make an appointment “to come by and look at those,” she said.
The giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information call Capers at (334) 874-7287.
