Mary Myrtis Austin

Mary Myrtis Austin died Sunday, July 15, 2007, in Vaughan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18 at Elkdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Guy Anderson officiating. Burial will be in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive visitors from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Austin was born January 11, 1923, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Mary Bennett Austin of

Perry County.

After graduating from Albert G. Parrish High School in the Class of 1942, she moved to Montgomery and began a lengthy career with Blue Print Services. After retiring in 1991 she returned to Selma.

She was a long time member of Elkdale Garden Club and well known for the beauty of her gardens at her home on Park Avenue.

Her brother Allan Austin of Selma is the only remaining survivor of her six siblings. She was predeceased by her sisters Allie Austin of Perry County and Kathleen Bond and Polly Schultz, both of Oklahoma; and her brothers Frank Austin of Selma and Jimmy Austin of

Perry County.

Survivors include her nephew Benjamin A. Austin (his wife Vickie) of Selma,

her nieces Teresa Hannigan (spouse Danny) of Midway, Georgia and Wanda Jackson (spouse Steve) of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee; a great-niece Rachael Austin, a student at the University of Alabama; and two great-nephews Joseph A. Austin, Selma, and Chris Hannigan, Savannah, Georgia; extended family members and numerous close friends.

Pallbearers will be members of the Board of Deacons of Elkdale Church.

Memorial gifts may be made to Elkdale Baptist Church or a charity of choice.

Kathryn Tarpley Knight

Kathryn Tarpley Knight, age 85, of Selma died Sunday July 15, 2007, at home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday July 18, 2007, at Timberidge Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, Georgia officiating. Mrs. Knight is survived by her sons, Dr. Nicholas A. (Susan) Knight, Terrance A. (Janis) Knight, and Ronald I. Knight, grandchildren, Kaley (Tommy) Atchison, Kristopher Knight, Corey Knight, Parker Kennedy, Ponda Knight, Dabney (Phil) Pilon, greatgrandchild, Lucy Pilon, other relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Haywood Knight, and Mrs. Faye Berryman. Mrs. Knight was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ocsar Tarpley, brother, Traylor Rodgens and her husband of fifty years, Highley Iverson Knight. Even into her later years she enjoyed fishing, crocheting, cross-stitch, crossword puzzles, and jewelry making.

She always loved animals and had a great love for the outdoors and wildlife.

Most of all she loved her husband, her three sons, and her grandchildren. Kathryn will be missed by them all. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Selma Animal Shelter. The family will receive friends at Haisten Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET .

Jacob Lawrence Jewell

Jacob Lawrence Jewell, age 69, of Foley, formerly of Selma, died Friday July 13, 2007, in Foley. Mr Jewell is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gail Smith Jewell of Foley, sons, Greg Jewell of Birmingham, Chris (Sally) Jewell of Gulf Breeze, FL, sister, Jean Jewell Asquith of Huntsville, brother, Jerry Jewell of Orrville, two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a son, Rick Jewell in 1984 and a brother, James Jewell in 1983. Funeral services and visitation were held in Foley on Sunday. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday July 17, 2007 at New Live Oak Cemetery directed by Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alabama Baptist Childrens Home-Central Administration P.O. Box 361767, Birmingham, AL 35236-1767.

Pallbearers will be Lee Holladay, O.W. Till III, Bruce Henderson, Don Hills, Dick Boozer, and Robert Tate. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Maverick Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church in Selma.

Bobby Dalton Smith

Bobby Dalton Smith, age 68, a truck driver of Sweet Water, AL., died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Southwest Alabama Medical Center. He was born February 6, 1939, in Lasca, AL. He was a member of Sweet Water United Methodist Church.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by: wife, Evelyn J. Smith of Sweet Water, Ala.; Six sons, James Walter Smith, Andrew Ranton Spencer Barentine and Gerald Charles all of Pine Hill, Ala., Thomas Dalton Smith of Butler, Ala., and William Henry Barentine and Adam Michael Barentine both of Sweet Water, Ala., two daughters, Robin Elizabeth Smith of Pine Hill, Ala. and Christan Dawn Barentine of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Evey Winston Smith of Thomaston, Ala.; two sisters, Francis S. Holley of Marianna, Fla. and Caroline Smith of Oklahoma City, Okla. and ten grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Michael Crear, 53, a resident of Selma, passed July 14, 2007, at a local hospital. Final arrangements entrusted to J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home.

Mr. Delapha Rudolph

Delapha Rudolph, age 45 , a resident of Selma, passed July 16, 2007, at the Spain Center in Birmingham, Ala. Funeral services will be announced at a later time by Miller Funeral Service.
