Cecil Hicks

Cecil Hicks passed away June 7 after a long illness. He was born in 1924.

He leaves a wife Elma Hicks, and his surviving sisters and brothers, Eula Mae Browning, Carolyn Vick, Joe Hicks, Billy Hicks, and Ray Hicks, daughter-in-law, Nancy Gaylor, a few cousins and quite a few nieces and nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Clyde Hicks, Jr. Cecil worked at Swift Oil Company for about 19 years. He was well known and liked by many people.

The funeral will be held on Monday, June 11, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directed by Minister Lawrence Wells. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 10, 2007 from 6:00 until 8:00

p.m. Pallbearers will be Hershall Kendrick, Steve Phillips, John Long, Don Phillips, Randy Barrett, and Glenn Phillips.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Gaylor, Albert Hicks, Allen Pugh, and Billy Hicks.

Dr. Jack Anderson Miller

Dr. Jack Anderson Miller, 78, a resident of Millbrook, Ala., died peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2007 after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 10, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Prattville Memorial with Dr. Travis Coleman officiating. A committal service will follow in the Ocmulgee Baptist Church Cemetery, north of Selma, Ala., with Reverend Donald Harris officiating, Prattville Memorial Chapel directing.

Mr. Miller was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marines followed by a distinguished career in secondary education.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherrill and Lucille Miller, and one sister, Joyce Cochran. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Joan Miller, Millbrook, Ala.; one daughter, Jan Kelley, Grove Hill, Ala.; three grandchildren, Peyton Powell, Lindsay Luker and Carmen Davis; five great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Jim Cochran; one nephew, Jimmy Cochran, both of Phenix City, Ala.; and one niece, Joy White, Kosciesko, Miss.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Layne Mims, Wayne Mims, Bob Vaughn, Joe Nettles, Bob Carnel and Jack Joseph. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Bruce Ward Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church and Fellow Gideons of Prattville. Mildred Fair Worford

Mildred Fair Worford, age 71, of Selma, died Monday, June 4, 2007 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Worford was the daughter of the late William Fair Jr. and Ida M. Browder.

She was a very active member of the Morning Star Baptist Church serving in many capacities including Sunday School Teacher, Adult Class #2, Choir member, Deaconess, Missionary Society, Pastor’s Aide (Group #6) Captain, N.B.C., and Vacation Bible School. Mildred received numerous awards and recognitions for her unselfish Christian duties.

She attended elementary school in Dallas County and earned her high school diploma from R.B. Hudson High School, Associate’s degree from Selma University, Bachelor’s of Science degree from Alabama A&M University, and a Master’s degree from Virginia State University.

She served in several professional organizations such as the N.E.A. (National Educational Association), A.E.A (Alabama Educational Association), and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

As an educator, Mrs. Worford touched, molded and directed so many lives. Because of this love for her profession, Mrs. Worford was chosen as Teacher of the Year and served as an Educator in the Selma City School System for 39 years.

On October 18, 1963 she married Mr. Offie James Worford Sr. and to this union two sons were born.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Offie James Worford Sr.; two sons, Offie James Jr. (Lori) Worford, and William F. Worford; one grandchild, Mari Olivia Worford; two sisters, Mrs. Arwilda Fair Smith and Mrs. Viola Fair McKenzie; two aunts, Mrs. Albert Wallace and Mrs. Selonia Mclntyre; three brother-in-laws, two sister-in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, former students and friends; God-son, William Hayes; God-daughter, Deborah Carter; God-brother and sister, Rev. Booker T. (Vera) Booker, Jr.

Services were held Saturday, June 9, 2007 at the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with viewing at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. B. T. Booker, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Fairlawn Memory Garden with J.H. Williams and Son’s Funeral Home directing.

Infant Kyshaun Dwayne Peoples

Infant Kyshaun Dwayne Peoples, age 2 months, of Tuscaloosa, Alabaama, passed June 5, 2007 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, June 10, 2007 at 12:00 noon at Knott Cemetery, Boligee, Alabama.
