Police said Thursday they believed the motive was robbery when James Whitt, 44, was shot and killed outside the back door of his mobile home. The men escaped with a laptop computer, a camera and an undetermined amount of money, police said.

Police were following leads from witnesses when one of the accused reportedly tried to flee a local eatery without paying for a soda. Police were called and the incident helped investigators with clues, which led to their capture.

Police said the incident is still under investigation and could result in at least one additional arrest.

Whitt’s death was the third murder in Dallas County this year. In both instances, suspects were arrested and charged with murder.
