Giving through service

This past week was National

Volunteer Week, and several local agencies held celebrations to honor those who serve the community.

Consider what services in our community would be like without volunteers in organizations like Vaughan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and others.

In addition, consider the events, fund-raisers and contributions by civic organizations like the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Exchange Clubs of Selma and Valley Grande, Pilot Club and others.

An often overlooked group of volunteers in any community are those who minister through the local churches.

Food pantries, clothes closets, tutoring services, nursing home and other entities benefit from those who volunteer their time, talents and money.

Our community is a richer place because of those who contribute. We say thanks to those who make a difference and encourage others to get involved.

There are many ways to do that. Contact a local agency, join a civic group or find out where volunteers are needed in your local church.

We all have something we can give.
