Alex Jacob Cohn
Alex Jacob Cohn, 18, died Monday, March 13, 2007 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass., after a sudden illness caused by viral encephalitis.
A memorial service in his honor was held Wednesday, March 14 at Beaver Country Day School, Chestnut Hill, where he was a senior. He had been accepted on early decision to enter Connecticut College in the fall.
Alex, an avid freestyle skier, took his first run on the slopes at age three. He attended Mount Snow Academy in West Dover, Vt., during his junior year in high school and finished fifth in his age group at National Freestyle Competition at Northstar Mountain in California. With his brother, Zachary Cohn, Alex put together short videos of freestyle skiing, posting them on YouTube and other Internet sites. At times, he was both producer and featured skier.
He enjoyed a number of friends from Beaver, Mount Snow Academy, Camp Samoset in Maine and The Carroll School, where he was a student before entering Beaver. At his memorial service music was by BCDS Chamber Ensemble, remembrances of Alex were given by faculty member Joe Christy, classmate Graham Lloyd, his uncle Ted Kaplan, his grandfather, Seymour Cohn, his brother, Zachary Cohn and his father, Rick Cohn.
Prayers and Psalms were by Cantor Louise Treitman.
Alex is survived by his father and mother, Rick and Carol Kaplan Cohn of Weston, Mass.; his brother Zachary, the University of Wisconsin; his grandparents June and Seymour Cohn of Selma; his grandmother Ziona Kaplan-Weber of West Hartford, Conn.; his aunts and uncles Bobbie Woronow and Ted Kaplan and Liz and Bill Howard of West Hartford; and his cousins Alex and Lauren Kaplan and Even, Jeremy and Jessica Howard.

Eddie Hatcher Sr., of Selma,
passed away March 16,
2007 at Shelby County Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Miller Funeral Services.
