Roberta Callens Cooper

Roberta Callens Cooper, age 87, of Selma, AL and formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Lighthouse Nursing Home.

Wake will be held Friday, March 9, 2007 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Lewis Brothers Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Grant Chapel AME Church, Summerfield Rd.

She is survived by her loving son, Willie (Esther) King; two daughters, Virginia L. Cooper and Verna (Willie) Anderson, and her loving sister, Willie Mae Callens.

She was preceded in death by her son, James Tate and brother, Robert Callens.

She was a grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of twelve.

Benjamin Burton Rowell Jr.

Benjamin Burton Rowell, Jr. (1939-2007) beloved husband, father, and son passed on March 1, 2007.

Born in Selma, AL, Burton grew up in Carolwville, AL and later attended high school in Pensacola.

He joined the Army, was stationed in Bamberg, Germany and finished his education at Troy University, AL.

In Maryville, TN he was president of American Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce, personnel manager of Levi Strauss and vice president of Bank of Maryville.

He moved his family to Leesburg, FL where he founded and was president of Leesburg Soccer Club, president Kiwanis Club and was personnel manager of Wolverine Gasket Co.

He is survived his wife, Jeannine Rowell of 41 years; his mother, Margaret McClellan of Pensacola; his son, Benjamin Burton Rowell III and wife Kimberly of Atlanta, GA; his son, Knox Lee Rowell of Denver, CO; and his dog, Mister.

A memorial service was held March 5, 2007 at St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg, FL.

There will be a graveside service in Carolwville Cemetery on Saturday, March 10 at 11 AM with the Reverend Louie Skipper officiating.

Donations may be made to St. Christopher’s Pensacola and St. Paul’s Carolwville.

Charlotte Mae Barker Sims

Charlotte Mae Barker Sims, age 70, of West Blocton, died March 5, 2007 in Tuscaloosa.

Funeral services will be held 11:00A.M., Friday March 9, 2007 at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Baker officiating. Burial will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery.

Mrs. Sims is survived by her sister, Shirley Cullison of Oregon, daughters, Belinda (Charles) Spradlin of West Blocton, Marcia (Woodrow) Penny of West Blocton, sons, Charles (Wynette) Sims of Bessemer, Marvin Sims of Bessemer and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Alice Gulley

Alice Gulley, a resident of Ft. Deposit, AL died March 4, 2007.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m at the Fort Deposit Municiple Complex with Rev. James Price officiating. Burial in Mt. Moriah #1 Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Margaret Blevins

Margaret Blevins, age 70, of Marion Junction, AL died on March 3, 2007 at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held on March 10, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Macewdonia C. P. Church with Rev. Anthony Cureton officiating. Burial will follow in Macedonia C.P. Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. directing.

Bertha Thomas

Bertha Thomas, 84, of Selma, AL passed away March 7, 2007.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Walker Mortuary.

Dinea Minter Lacy

Dinea Minter Lacy, age 90, of New Haven, Connecticut., formerly of Selma, AL died on February 2, 2007 at Jewish Nursing Home in Connecticut.

Funeral services were held on February 8, 2007 at Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jackie H. Williams, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in

New Haven Connecticut with Curvin Council Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include: four sons, Birl Jackson, Charles Frank, James and William George Lacy, all of Connecticut; three daughters, Mary Harris, Fannie Mae Caddell and Eleanor Reynolds, all of New Haven, Connecticut; one sister, Ethel Mae Coleman; twenty-seven grandchildren, fifty-six great grandchildren, two sons-in-laws, three daughters-in-laws,

and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Charles F. Lacy; parents, Felix and Ethel Minter; brother, Jack Minter, Sr. and sisters, Ella Hardy and Freedonia Watkins.

Donald Nichols

Donald Nichols, age 78, of Selma died Thursday, March 08, 2007 at his home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00A.M. Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Ocmulgee Baptist Church with Dr. Robert H. Taylor officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife, Annie M. Edwards Nichols, his children, Deborah Nichols, Dixie (Trina) Nichols, Angela (Ricky) Corbett, Dawn (Jesse) Nichols, Daniel (Nora) Nichols, Douglas (Nancy) Nichols, stepson, Edward (Elaine) Shumate, and stepdaughter, Carolyn (Dannie) Jones, and Shirley Rowell, 26 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Nichols was retired Air Force and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Michael Corbett, Richard Corbett, Stewart Nichols, Alex Nichols, Bryan Jones, Blake Jones, and Mitchell Rowell.

Honorary pallbearers are the Men’s Sunday School Class of Ocmulgee Baptist Church.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, March 9, 2007 from 6:00 – 8:00P.M.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Cahaba Hospice.

Lucille Taylor Glover

Lucille Taylor Glover, 84, a resident of Selma, passed March 5, 2007 in Ocean Springs, MS.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 10, 2007 from Calvary M.B. Church with Pastor C. A. Lett officiating.

Burial will follow in New Shiloh Cemetery in Sardis with J. H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Bailey of Biloxi, MS; three grandchildren, Chae D’Ann Lucile Bailey, Tia Channell Bailey and Alfred Bailey, Jr.; one sister, Louise Stevens and other relatives and friends.

Emma L. Hyde

Emma L. Hyde, age 61, a native of White Hall died on March 1, 2007.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday March 10, 2007 at 12:00 Noon at the

Unity Baptist Church (White Hall) with Rev. Albert Whiting Officiating. Interment will be held in Unity BaptistChurchyard Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Master Anthony C. Collins Jr.

Master Anthony C. Collins, Jr., infant, of Orrville, AL., passed away March 3, 2007 at Vaughan Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be Friday, March 9, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, Orrville, Ala. with Rev. Dwight Woods officiating and directed by Miller Funeral Service.

He is survived by his parents Brittney Snow and Anthony C. Collins, Jr., grandparents: Judy Snow, Gloria Sturdivant, and a host of aunts and uncles.

Samuel James Snell

Mr. Samuel James Snell, age 62, of Selma, AL, passed away March 3, 2007 in Selma, AL.

Funeral services are Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. at Brown Chapel A.M.E. officiated by Elder Meyers Hawkins, Jr.

Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Mr. Snell is survived by his parents, Willie Mae McCurdy; four sons, Earnest Jerome, Michael, Gregory, and Andre; seven brothers, Calvin B., Amos G., Earl G., Sidney, Earnest, Kelvin, and Owens; seven sisters, May Nell, Lester Ann, Illene Miree, Umi Jean, Mattie M., Alice, and Alberta; 17 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 4 daughters-in-law, 10 brothers-in-law, 11 sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Brown, James A. Johnson, Michael V. Johnson, Spencer M. Johnson, Norman Johnson, and Kelsey T. Summer.

Rosie Pearl Franklin

Ms. Rosie Pearl Franklin, 91, a resident of Selma, AL, passed away March 1, 2007 at Warren Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services are March 10, 2007 and 1:00 P.M. at New Shady Grove M.P. Church with Rev. B. A. Scott, Sr. officiating.

Burial will be at Mt. Olive #2 Baptist Church directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Ms. Franklin was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Marchus and Lubertha Franklin and one son, William Henry Franklin.

Ms. Franklin is survived by her daughter, Bertha Mae Franklin, two grandchildren; William Franklin, Sr. and Shirley Franklin, two great grandchildren; William and Monique Franklin, Jr., four nieces; Della Mae Johnson, Evelyn Fants, Margaret Spellman, and Velma Robinson (Lewis), one nephew, William H. Lewis Jr, and other relatives and friends.

The body will lie in state from 12:00 noon to 1:00 P.M.

Sarah Monique Thomas, 27, a resident of Selma, passed March 5, 2007.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 10, 2007 from New Morningstar Baptist Church, Marion Junction with Rev. Chester Cooper officiating.

Burial will follow in Baker-Whitt Cemetery with J. H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.

Minnie Gamble

Ms. Minnie Gamble, 85, of Selma, passed away March 8, 2007 at Vaughan Regional Hospital.
