NEWBERN – A two-vehicle accident Sunday night claimed the lives of five area residents.
Alabama State Troopers reported the accident occurred at approximately 9:12 p.m. at the intersection of Alabama Highway 61 and Hale County Road 10, just over a mile south of Newbern.
According to troopers, a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Newell Wayne Eicher, 73, apparently entered the path of a 1984 Chevrolet Caprice driven by Markiece Shaddell Quarles, 23, of Newbern.
Eicher was accompanied by his wife, Blanche Eicher, 70. Quarles was accompanied by Matthew Turell Sneed, 20, and Keith Marchant Evans, 24, both of Newbern.
“The Ford, driven by Mr. Eicher, was traveling eastbound on County Road 10, approaching the intersection of Alabama Highway 61. The Chevrolet, driven by Mr. Quarles, was traveling southbound on Alabama 61,” said Trooper John Reese. “The Ford apparently pulled into the path of the Chevrolet, which resulted in a collision. As a result of the collision, all the occupants in both vehicles died.”
