Beverley Hill Furniss

Beverley Hill Furniss, age 91, of Spanish Fort, formerly of Selma died Thursday December 21, 2006 a the Westminster Village retirement community where she had lived for 17 years.

Graveside services will be held Thursday December 28, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Old Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Polk Van Zandt officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Frances Beverley Hill was born August 1, 1915 at Portsmouth, Va., daughter of John LeVoy Hill and Aline Chrisian Graves Hill.

She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College, studied for a year at the University of Paris, France and received a master’s degree from the University of Alabama.

In 1940 she married John Perkins Furniss, a lifelong Selmian.

He was a founding partner of the firm that is now Furniss, Vaughan & Co., Public Accountants, and was senior partner at the time of his death in 1984.

Mrs. Furniss was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma, for more than forty years, and was active in several civic and patriotic organizations.

From 1967 to 1973 she was state president of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Alabama.

She is survived by a son, John N. Furniss (Mary Ann), of Wilmington, NC, a daughter, Emory Furniss Maxwell (Charles), of Phoenix, AZ, a grandson, John Furniss Maxwell, also of Phoenix, and a granddaughter, Christian Key Maxwell, of Atlanta, GA. Another son, Allan L Furniss, of Selma died in 1968.

Memorial gifts, if desired, may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or to charity of choice.

Sadie Rush Harris

Sadie Rush Harris, age 88, of Valley Grande, AL, passed away December 20, 2006 at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 23, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Fancher and Rev. Johnny Rush officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Interment will be in Pineview Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be Friday, December 22, 2006, 6-8:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home.

She is survived by two sons, Sidney (Mattie) Harris, Jr. and Donald (Faye) Harris; daughter-in-law, Sarah Harris; sister, Lula Dee Bearden; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and very special friends, Larry, Angie, Timmy and Emily.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. E. Harris, Sr. and a son, Franklin Harris.

Pallbearers will be Danny Harris, Mark Harris, Jerry Mims, Chuck Harris, Charlton Harris and Larry Hatfield.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Vaughan Regional Medical Center ER and 5th floor.

Hamp Smith, Sr.

Hamp Smith, Sr. age 89, of Dallas County died on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Community Church. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include: four sons, Hamp (Willie Ann) Smith, Eddie (Lena) Smith, Nathaniel Smith and Gregory (Marilyn) Smith; eight daughters, Cathy (Richard) Upchurch, Mittie (Robert) Smith, Marjester (John) Brown, Gwendolyn (Samuel) Shorter, Barbara (Michael) Green, Margaret (Terry) Powell, Leshia Smith and Sandra (Roderick) Winfield; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lizzie M. Smith and one daughter, Vera Smith Washington.

Mr. Harrison Carter

Mr. Harrison Carter, age 72, of Demopolis, Alabama passed December 15, 2006 in Gallion, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Paul Baptist Church in Demopolis, Alabama with Rev. Charlie Moore, pastor and rev. Nathaniel Carter officiating. Interment will follow on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Louise Vaultz DoSilvia, 86, formerly of Selma passed December 15, 2006.

Funeral will be Saturday, December 23,2 2006 at 2:30 p.m. at the Chapel of J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Morton officiating. Burial in Lincoln Cemetery.

Daisy Thomas

Daisy Thomas, age 90, of Orrville, AL died on December 18, 2006 at Warren Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at Rising Star with Rev. Eugene Bennett officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: two brothers, Ealle Jiles and Tommy Jiles; two sisters, Elnora Hicks and Mary Frances Watts; seven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, two sisters-in-laws, five nieces and five nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Jerome McMillian, Curtis Thomas, Adrian Thomas, Courtney Thomas and Fred Thomas, Jr.

Mrs. Delena Aldridge

Mrs. Delena Aldridge, age 82, of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Demopolis, Alabama passed December 13, 2006 at Alden Town Manor Nursing Home in Cicero, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Jefferson, Alabama with Rev. Edmond Charleston officiating.

Interment will follow in Scott Memorial Cemetery in Jefferson, Alabama.

Ella Flowers, age 86, of Selma, AL

died on December 15, 2006 at the local hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. John L. Ward officiating.

Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Ms. Lucy Speight

Ms. Lucy Speight, age 91, of Selma, AL died on December 21, 2006 at Baptist South Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity lutheran Church with Pastor Washington officiating.

Burial will follow in the St. Francis Cemetery in Camden with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: three brothers, James Hill, Rev. Matthew Hill and Edward D. Hill; three sisters, Ann M. Williams, Mollie H. Howard, and Sadie M. Jackson; six sisters-in-laws, four brothers-in-laws, twenty-five nieces and nephews, and host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Rebecca Henderson, age 91, of Selma, AL died on December 16, 2006 at a local nursing home.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Peterson Chapel.

Burial will follow in Zion #1 M.P. Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Welpha Harrell, Jr.

Welpha Harrell, Jr., 71, of Selma passed December 14, 2006.

Funeral will be Saturday, December 23,2 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Summer Grove Baptist Church with Rev. A.L. Allen officiating.

Burial in Lincoln Cemetery with J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.

Marcus McConnell

Mr. Marcus McConnell, 32, passed on December 15, 2006.

Farewell Ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23 at First Baptist, Roosevelt City. Pastor B.L. Palmore, Sr. officiating. Interment follows at New Oakdale.

Family Visitation scheduled for Friday, Dec. 22 from 6 – 7 p.m.
