Curtis Peoples
Curtis Peoples, age 47, of Merietta, Georgia died on November 27, 2006 at his home. Funeral services will be held on December 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at New Shiloh Baptist Church in Sardis, Ala. with Rev. Doc. Stevenson E. Tullis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Hanley-Shelton Funeral Home of Marietta, Ga. directing.
Survivors include: a loving and devoted wife, Debra Hardy; a caring and passionate mother, Mable Smith Peoples; one son, Xavier Curtis Peoples; one brother, Walter Peoples, Jr.; one sister-in-law; and a host of cousins.
Mr. Peoples was preceded in death by his father, Walter Peoples, Sr.
The body will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. until the beginning of the service at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family request that flowers be delivered no later than noon.
Thomas E. Mims
Thomas E. Mims, age 71, of Valley Grande, died Monday, November 27, 2006 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30, 2006 at Westwood Church of God with Bro. Kip Box and Bro. Johnathan Lambert officiating. Burial at Pineview Memory Gardens with Lawrence Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 29, 2006 from 6-8. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Mims; son, Davis (Nina) Mims; daughters, Diane (Ken) Winfree, Sabrina Mims and Laurie Mims; brothers, Jackie Mims, Ronald Mims and Jimmy Mims; sisters, Helen Bates, Eunice Driver, Faye Ward and Betty Owens; grandchildren, Shannon Chappell, Scott Winfree and Abby Andrews and two great grandchildren. Mr. Mims was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie and Lena Mims; a brother, Donald Mims and two sisters, Lorene Thomas and Lola Robinson. Pallbearers will be James Earl Bates, E.C. Ward, Bobby Girlie, Ken Winfree, Tim Mims, and Chad Mims.
William Herbert McGee
Herb McGee died on Monday, November 27, 2006, at Warren Manor in Selma, Alabama, after an extended illness. Before his retirement in 1994, he was Director of Child Nutrition and Transportation for the Dallas County Schools and a cattle farmer in Summerfield.
He was born January 25, 1937, in McNairy County, Tennessee, and grew up near Selmer, TN. The National Jr. College Basketball Tournament brought him to Alabama where he was recruited by Coach Neal Posey of Huntingdon College in Montgomery. In 1960, Herb became the first pitcher on Huntingdon’s first baseball team and a forward on Huntingdon’s basketball team. In 1993, he was named to the Athletic Hall of Fame at Huntingdon.
Coach McGee came to Selma in 1964 and coached years at Parrish High School later Selma High School. In 1969, he was named All-Star Coach in both baseball and basketball. After getting his M. Ed., he moved from coaching to assistant principal at Southside High School and then later to principal. He was a avid fisherman and hunter in addition to his administrative
duties and his work as a cattle farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Inell Gavin Rentz McGee, three children: Stan McGee (John H. Finley, IV) of Boston, MA, Dr. Monica Decker (Dr. Bill Decker) of Marion, Oh, and Gavin McGee (Becca Huizinga) of Phoenix, AZ, and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Rachel Decker. He is also survived by two brothers, John Ernest McGee of Madison, AL, and Bennie McGee of Alamo, TN, and two sisters, Joyce Brooks of Selmer, TN, and Doris Robinson of Memphis, TN, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Friends who want to remember Mr. McGee are encourage to contribute to Church Street United Methodist, Huntingdon College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Diabetes Foundation or to a personal charity of their choice.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Church Street United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Johnny Lindsey
Johnny Lindsey, age 70, of Selma, Ala. died on November 27, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be announced later by Miller Funeral Service.
Gloria A. Goldsby
Gloria A. Goldsby (Pig), age 46, of Selma, AL died on November 24, 2006 at home. Funeral services will be held on November 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Karl Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Fair Lawn Cemetery with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include: her parents, Thomas and Classie Goldsby; one brother, Earl Goldsby; three sisters, Dora A. Yarbrough of Oakland, CA, Thomasina M. Goldsby and Gertrude Lewis of Selma, AL; grandmother, Laura Yarbrough of Birmingham, AL; aunts, Bonnie Mae Rivers of Youngtown, OH, Dorothy (Dan) Leachman of American Canyon, CA, Ethel (William) Taylor of Fultondale, AL, Annetta (Jose) Gadsen of Pleasant Grove, AL, Sharon Yarbrough of Birmingham, AL, Ruth Lawler of Detroit, MI, Elnora Roper of FL, Pearl Richardson of Selma, AL, Ruby (Willie) Rose of Selma, AL; uncle, Lyndon Yarbrough of Birmingham, AL.
