Shauntay Gooden is the first hero of the season for the Keith girls’ basketball team.
With seconds left on the clock, Gooden hit a layup and gave the Bears a 41-40 win over Aliceville in the Greensboro Classic Saturday.
The Bears overcame a less than stellar showing early and rallied from behind in the second half.
“We came out kind of flat,” said Keith coach Tommy Tisdale. “We kind of played to the level of our opponent. We could have played a better game, but I’ll take a win however I can get it. We played well in the second half and especially in the fourth quarter. We scored 16 in the fourth, and that’s more than we scored in the entire first half.”
Keith scored just four points in the second quarter, taking a 13-11 lead into the locker room.
The Bears gave up a lead in the fourth, and got within one point on a pair of free throws by Vanlisha Jones.
Jones led the Bears with 18 points, and Gooden and Tracey Rayford each scored eight. Angelica Dukes added five points.
