Now at the halfway point of the season in AHSAA football, Keith is one of the teams still hanging on for dear life in the region.
The Bears (1-4, 0-3 2A Region 1) played yet another close game Friday night, one that could have been won had it not been for mental mistakes.
And a lot of yellow laundry on the field.
“There were so many flags, I thought at one point we would get backed out of the end zone,” said coach Harry Crum in an interview earlier this week.
It was a familiar story for Keith: Penalties and bad breaks result in a close loss.
But if the Bears hope to make the playoffs, they have to start playing well right away.
“I don’t think anyone is playing that well in the region right now. We still have a chance,” Crum said.
The one exception to that statement might by the Bears’ next opponent.
Southern Choctaw (4-1, 2-1) is riding a two-game winning streak and has an average margin of victory of 21 points.
The Bears will get a little help in their bid to make the playoffs.
The second half of the season features three home games, including the next two.
“We started out pretty well, and we haven’t been playing as well as the season has gone on,” Crum said. “But we still have a chance.”
