Monnette W. Register

Monnette W. Register, a resident of Selma, AL and a former resident of Slocomb, AL died Tuesday, September 5, 2005 at Selma Regional Medical Center. She was 90.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2006 at First Baptist Church in Slocomb, Alabama with Rev. David Tinsley officiating. Burial will follow in New Hinson Baptist Church Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Register will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time on Thursday and the family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to service time.

Mrs. Register was born December 9, 1915, in Geneva County, Alabama. She resided in Pensacola, Florida for over 50 years prior to moving to Slocomb in 1989. For the past several years, she lived at Cedar Hill Assisted Living in Selma.

Mrs. Register was a member of East Hill Baptist Church in Pensacola where she taught Sunday School and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Slocomb.

Mrs. Register is predeceased by her brother, Henry Williford and her husband, George Radford Register, Sr.

Survivors include a son, George Radford Register, Jr. and his wife Evelyn, Selma, AL; three grandchildren, George Register III and his wife, Amanda, Dublin, GA, Jackson Register and his wife, Marti, Birmingham, AL, Alison Register, Montgomery, AL; three great-grandchildren, Allison Katherine Register, George Radford Register IV and Mary Chappell Register; a brother, Frank Williford, Auburn, AL; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Doris Williford, Auburn, AL, a sister-in-law, Wilma Williford, Auburn, AL; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Hilton Register, Ronny Aplin, Larry Toole, John Hall, Rad Register and Jackson Register.

Mr. Tom Smith

Mr. Tom Smith of Griffin, GA passed away Monday, September 4, 2006 at his residence after a battle with cancer.

Mr. Smith was born in Douglas County on January 22, 1932 to the late Ruben Thomas Smith and the late Clara Daniell Smith. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Georgia National Guard, a former SGT with the city of Griffin Police Dept., owner and operator of the Smith Service Center Since 1968. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Yaarab Temple of the shrine, past president and current vice-president of the Georgia Association of Petroleum Retailers, past president of the National Coalition of Petroleum Retailers, a former bass singer with the Flint River Boys, former co-owner of the WCOM local cable TV station, active Deacon and charter member of the Ringgold Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Smith; children and their spouses, Dr. Logan and Carol Smith of Cornelia, Carol and Hal Hill of Pine Mountain, Rita and Stan Miller of Williamsburg, VA., Paul and Sherry Smith of Valley Grande, AL., Mark and Brenda Smith of Marshall, TX..; 14 grandchildren; brother, William Darrell Smith of Griffin; Sister, Joann Gadd of Ocala, FL,; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Tom Smith will be conducted on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Ringgold Baptist Church, located on the corner of Jackson Rd. and Jenkinsburg Rd. Reverend Tim Conort and Dr. E.C. Chatham will officiate. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Smith will be carried to the church to lie in state from noon until the funeral hour.
