Zula Mae Rawls

Graveside services for Zula Mae Rawls, who died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, will be at 3 p.m. Friday in New Live Oak Cemetery, Selma. Dr. Jerry Henry will officiate. Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home of Fairhope is directing.

Friends may visit with the family from 1:30 to 2:30 at Elkdale Baptist Church.

Born August 29, 1914 in Selma, she lived in Selma all of her life until June 2006 when she moved to Fairhope. While in Selma, Zula was active in all the activities of First Baptist Church, then of Elkdale Baptist Church. She was a member of DAR and volunteered in many community events such as Pink Lady and Meals on Wheels. She was an avid bridge player.

Zula was preceded in death by her husband, Russell I (Rusty) Rawls.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carolyn Rawls Hammill of Birmingham and Susan Rawls Henry of Fairhope; her two sons-in-law, Thomas Andrew Hammill and Dr. Jerry Michael Henry; her four grandsons, William Charles Porter, Jr., Jerry Michael Henry Jr. (Jenny), Russell Rawls Henry, and David Carroll Henry; and her two great grandsons, Lawson Michael Henry and Thomas Rawls Henry. Other survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Copeland of Destin, FL; sister-in-law, June Rawls Thomason (Wiley) of Selma; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be her four grandsons as well as John Kenneth Henry and Thomas Carroll Henry.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be given to your favorite charity or the building fund of Elkdale Baptist Church, Selma.

Mrs. Ada D. Norman

Mrs. Ada D. Norman, age 60, of Forkland, Alabama passed away on August 25, 2006.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Lloyd Chapel Baptist Church in Forkland, Alabama with Rev. Clayborn May officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The remains will repose at the church on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Mr. Mozell Long

Mr. Mozell Long, age 54, of Gallion, Alabama passed away on August 23, 2006 at Hale County Hospital in Greensboro, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 12:00 noon at the Christian Chapel Baptist Church in Demopolis, Alabama with Rev. Fred Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Demopolis, Alabama. The remains will repose at the church on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

John Garrett Blue

John Garrett Blue, age 26, of Plantersville, AL, passed away August 30, 2006.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 2, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Walter Johnson officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Interment will be in Jones Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 1, 2006, 6-8:00 p.m.

He is survived by his parents, John D. “Danny” and Stephanie Blue; one sister, Jennifer (Josh) Locke; maternal grandparents, Allen and Jean Sanderson; aunts and uncles, Sedera Darby, Thomas (Sharon) Blue, Carl (Vickie) Blue, David (Ann) Sanderson, Charles K. (Judy) Sanderson, Marcia Ezelle, Wesley (Julie) Sanderson, and Melvia McKinley.

He is also survived by great aunts and uncles and numerous cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William Duncan and Mary Lee Blue.

John loved fishing and hunting and was an avid baseball fan.

He was a member of Jones Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Ben Ray, Buddy Welch, James Frederick, Rusty Headley, Joseph Bedsole and John Daniel Terrell.

Honorary pallbearers will be his co-workers at Petty Line Construction.

Mr. Patrick J. Davis

Mr. Patrick J. Davis, age 26, of Sardis, Alabama died on August 27, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at New Mount Lebnon Baptist Church with Edward Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Old Mount Lebnon Cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

The body will lie in state from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. in the church.

Survivors include: Dan and Bertha Davis; seven brothers, Dan Jr., Michael and Jeffrey Davis, Mark, Nelson, Nathaniel, and Nathan Snow; three sisters, Inell, Annette, and Brenda; two sisters-in-law, Terika and Karen Davis; two nieces, Aprylle Davis and Jasmine Richardson; and two nephews, Chris and A.J. Davis.

Pallbearers will be LeRon, Ernest, Warren and Darrick Davis, Jermeico McGuire and Melvin Hall.

Estelle Doris Todd Stephenson

Estelle Doris Todd Stephenson, age 98, a resident of Selma, passed away on August 26, 2006 in Detroit, Michigan.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. from Brown Chapel AME Church with Pastor David Grant of Gaines Chapel AME Church officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Stephenson was born in Minter, Alabama to the late Isolm and Ellen Purifoy Todd.

She was educated in the Selma Public School System being the first member of her family to complete high school.

She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Alabama State University and taught in the Dallas County School System until her retirement.

She was an advocate for equal education and her efforts resulted in the building of Tipton High School.

Estelle was married to the late Robert (Bob) Stephenson of Sardis who preceded her in death. She was a devout and committed member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served faithfully until restricted by ill- health.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 1, 2006 from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the chapel of J.H. Williams & Sons Funeral Home, 1226 Minter Avenue.

Mr. Clemia Anderson, Sr.

Mr. Clemia Anderson, Sr., age 70, of Marion Junction, Alabama died on August 29, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, September 3, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist with Rev. Dwight Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Family Circle Cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: mother, Emma Callens; step father, Willie Smith; three sons, Clemia (Valerie) Anderson, Jr., James (Shelia) Anderson, and Aaron (Shirley) Anderson; three daughters, Crandell (Essix) Hill, Karen (Dorial) Pettaway, Donna (Darrie) Allen, and Shirley (Keith) Kelly; one sister, Nell Callens Dysart; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; a wonderful neighbor, Hattie Craig and a good friend, John Henry Rodgers.

Walter Young, Jr.

Walter Young, Jr., age 64, of Dallas County died on August 27, 2006 at his home.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at East Salem Baptist Church with W.J. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in East Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: three sons, Walter (Willie Mae) Young of Selma, Alabama, John L. (Pam) Young of Selma, Alabama and step son, Jeroman (Stephanie) Young of Carrollton, Texas; three daughters, Loretta (Earnie) Campbell of Selma, Alabama, Jacqueline (Roosevelt) Lee of Whitehall, Alabama, and step daughter, Connie (Stacy) Davis of Sardis, Alabama; five brothers, Eddie Winfield of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Young, Quincy Young, Walter (Patricia) Young and James (Sonya) Young all of Mobile, Alabama; five sisters, Lizzie Dejurnett of Selma, Alabama, Catherine (Samuel) Waller, Charla (Don) Gresham, Lynnette (Grover) Smith, and Flora Young all of Mobile, Alabama. Also surviving are, eleven grandchildren, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Willie Clyde Lawrence

Willie Clyde Lawrence, age 65, of Jones, AL, passed away August 30, 2006 in a Marion nursing home.

Graveside services will be Sunday, September 3, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Jones, AL with Rev. Calvin Strickland officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, September 2, 2006, 6-8:00 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lawrence of Jones, AL; three sons, Mike (Susan) Lawrence and Kyle (Missy) Lawrence of Jones, AL and J. T. (Lea) Lawrence of Billingsley, AL; one brother, Billy (Christianne) Lawrence of Jones, AL; three sisters, Faye Simpson of Newell, AL, Jessie Summerlin of Huntsville, AL and Betty Johnson of Riverside, CA; and five grandsons, John Michael, Lee, Wes, Matt and Dalton.

Samuel Williams

Samuel Williams, age 66, of Mobile, Alabama died on August 29, 2006 in Mobile (Alabama) Infirmary.

Graveside funeral services are scheduled for Friday, September 1, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Fairlawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Leon Bell officiating and Miller Funeral Service directing.

Survivors include: two sisters, Clara Willis and Para Lee Wilmer; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews. Also surviving is the Staff and Caregivers of Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
