Edna Griffin Ledyard

September 28, 1929 -March 9, 2006

Edna Griffin Ledyard died peacefully in Huntsville, Alabama on Wednesday.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, devout Christian, and an energetic volunteer in numerous charitable, church, civic and social organizations.

Edna Griffin Ledyard was born in Demopolis, Alabama to Edna Irene Gibson Griffin and Goodman Griffith Griffin.

Edna was educated in the Demopolis public schools and graduated from Demopolis High School in 1946.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Edna was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Her long and loving marriage to Robert Elisha Ledyard, Jr. also began at Trinity on January 17, 1950, and lasted until her death.

During the 10 years immediately following marriage, most of her time was devoted to rearing her three children and maintaining a home for her family.

During this period, her family moved several times because of her husband’s employment with Alabama Power Company.

In January 1958, the family moved to Selma, Alabama, and Edna began devoting more time to volunteer civic, charitable, and church activities.

She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish in Selma until her death.

She served the parish in a number of positions including Episcopal Young Churchmen Advisor, member of Vestry, Every Member Canvas Chairman, Delegate to Diocesan Convention, and Lector.

On the Diocese of Alabama level, Edna served the Church as Member of the Department of Ministry to Higher Education, Member of Bishop’s Diocesan Planning Council, Delegate to three Triennial Meetings of the Episcopal Church Women, and as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of Alabama.

She later served as Diocesan United Thank Offering Chairman and on the Diocesan Council of Alabama.

During the period 1980-1990, Edna was Administrator of the Clara Weaver-Parrish Memorial Trust Fund, a charitable trust, the trustees of which are the Wardens and Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Selma, Alabama.

At its Annual Meeting in 1990 the Dallas County Chapter, American Red Cross, presented Edna a Certificate of Appreciation for twenty-five years of service to the chapter.

This service included ten years as Chairman of Volunteers and several terms as a member of the Board of Directors.

Since 1958, Edna was a member of the Selma Charity League and held several offices in the League.

She participated fully in the social and charitable activities of this organization.

Edna was a member of the William Rufus King Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

At her death, she was serving the organization as Treasurer, Program Chairman, and Regent.

Her interests included travel, antiques and figurine collecting.

Edna is survived by her husband, Robert E. Ledyard, Jr.; her children, Robert E. Ledyard III, Goodman Griffin Ledyard, and Melanie Ledyard Lanphier;

and grandchildren, Charles Elisha Lanphier, Mary Hannah Lanphier, Ann Edna Ledyard, and Katherine Brooks Ledyard.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., March 11, 2006, in the Tipton Parlor at St.

Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma, Alabama.

The funeral service will be held in the sanctuary of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m.

Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Demopolis, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Saint Paul’s Memorial Fund or Episcopal Church Women’s Scholarship Fund.

Ruth Bell Moore

Ruth Bell Moore, age 77, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at a Montgomery area hospital. Services are 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. C.A. Lett, officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Walker Mortuary directing.

She was born on September 25, 1928 to Isaiah Williams and Eleanora Reese in Browns Station, Alabama.

She was member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was an active member of Sojourner Truth Eastern Star Chapter, #6 and a member of the Heroines of Jericho, Charles A. Lett Court #99.

She married her husband Samuel Clarence Moore who preceded her in death and two sisters Mary (Ernest) Wright and Estelle Wormerly, and three brothers, Wilse Reese, James Williams and George Striveston.

Left to cherish her memories: Her daughters Eleanor Sambolah of Brooklyn, NY and Lillian Daniels of Selma, AL; Her grandsons, Darryl (Geraldine) Daniels of Montgomery, AL; Erik (Dina) Daniels of Bordentown, NJ, Marvin Johnson and Boyma Sambolah of Brooklyn, NY; Marcus (Danny) Daniels of Selma, AL; granddaughters, Stephanie Carnathan of Leeds, AL, Sonja Ruth (Prophet) Powell of Bronx, NY and Mier Sambolah of Brooklyn, NY and Alaina Daniels of Selma, AL; and Gezelle Moore of Chicago, IL, a daughter by marriage; nephew, Jack Hurry of Baton Rouge, LA; a niece Juanita Ellis of Selma, AL; cousins, Jake Banks of Fort Wayne, IN and Mary Dover of Selma, AL; and a host of other family and friends. Also, Harry B. (Karen) Maring of San Francisco, CA and Susan (Larry) Cerf of Oakland, CA, who she also considered her children.

John L. Lee

John L. Lee, age 42, of White Hall, AL died on March 3, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for March 11, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Unity Baptist Church with Pastor Albert Whiting officiating. Burial will follow in the church yard cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include his fianc’, Shontaea Longmire; four sons, John Gresham, Frank Gresham, Cedric Blackmon and Jermichael Lee; four daughters, Lateshia Lee, Khiana Smith, Ariana Smith and Shyternea Longmire; two brothers, Joe Lee, Jr., and Joe Gordon; five sisters, Della Brenson, Catherine Dixon, Maude Whestone, Mary Richardson and Jessie Garrett; two grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews and a devoted friend, Calvin Brazil.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Emma H. Moorer

Emma H. Moorer, age 90, of Selma, AL died on March 8, 2006 at her home.

Funeral services are scheduled for March 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Selmont Comm Baptist Church with D. L. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens, Inc. with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include four sons, Orven Robert (Nancy) of Columbus, OH, Earnest

(Clara) of Selma, AL and Willie Moorer of Denver, CO; seven daughters, Cora Taylor, Clara Rumph and Rosie Moorer of Columbus, OH, Pearlie Glover and Hattie (Wilbert) Pullmon of Selma, AL, Deloris (Loveless) Fails and Annie (Stephen) Robinson of Birmingham, AL; 87 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren;15 great great grandchildren and a host of other relative and friends and her church family, Selmont Comm Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Gloria J. Turner

Gloria J. Turner, age 45, of Marion Junction, AL died on March 2, 2006 at her home.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive P. B. Church, Marion Jct., with Rev. Edward Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include her mother, Rebecca Turner; two daughters, Keyona Turner and Kamyra Turner; two brothers, Glenn Turner and Charles Turner; three sisters, Rosie Rayford, Alice Turner and Daisy O’Brien.

Pallbearers will be Local Unit 516 and Keith High School class of 1978.

Julia C. Moultrie

Julia C. Moultrie, age 45, of Selma, AL died on March 3, 2006 at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Church of Jesus Christ with Bishop Bill Mott officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include one son, Fred L. Moultrie; one daughter, Rochelle Lewis; six brothers, William Moultrie, Pollard Moultrie, Sammy Moultrie, Sam Blount, Percy Moultrie and Johnny Moultrie; two sisters, Bertha Johnson and Willie Mae Moore.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Junior Moultrie.

Mary Elizabeth Harrell

Mary Elizabeth Harrell, age 64, formerly of Selma, died on March 4, 2006 in New Orleans, LA.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, March 11, 2006 from West Trinity Baptist Church with Revs. A. Williams and Noily Paul officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Memory Gardens with J. H. Williams & Sons directing.

Mary was born in Selma and was educated in the Selma Public School System.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Alabama A & M University.

She recently retired as the Upward Bound Coordinator with Southern University in New Orleans.

Mary was a member of Greater St. Stephens FCBC in New Orleans where she was a dedicated member of the Annual Family and Friends Day Committee, the Beautifying Club and the Pastor’s Aid Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Harrell and Arrilla Moorer Harrell and a sister Jean Harrell Wormerly.

She leaves to cherish her memories a son, William B. Harrell, Sr. (Patricia Ann); a brother, Maj. Gen. Ernest Harrell (Paola); sisters, Nancy Jones (John) , Hattie Sam and Billie Clinton (Carver); a grandson, William B. Harrell, Jr.; a long time friend and companion, Damon Kiel and a host of other family and friends.

The body will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services.

Bessie Minge Wendt

Bessie Minge Wendt passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2006 . She was 89.

Bess was born in Faunsdale, Alabama where she will be laid to rest with her late husband, retired Army Colonel James Robert Wendt Jr.

She was the devoted mother of James Robert Wendt III, beloved mother-in-law of Susan Vreeland-Wendt, and grandmother of Shannon Wendt and Hunter Cameron Wendt.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Turner Cameron, and mother, Louise Cameron of Faunsdale.

She will be laid to rest on Sunday March 12, graveside, at St. Michael’s cemetery in Faunsdale, at 2:00 p.m.

The family requests that donations be made in her name to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Milton (Mickey)

Sprott Brislin

Milton (Mickey) Sprott Brislin, Jr., 85, of Spanish Fort, Alabama, died

March 8, 2006.

Mickey was a descendant of one of the pioneer families in Central Alabama. He was a retired Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and served in the United States Air Force 447th Bomb Group during WWII.

He founded Brislin Air Conditioning and Heating, Inc. in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1956.

He was actively involved and a long time member of the Episcopal Church, Rotary Club, and the YMCA.

Mickey is survived by his wife, Patricia Beaver Brislin, of 60 years.

Other surviving relatives include daughter, Judy Brislin Ollinger of Tucker, Ga.; son, Mickey Brislin III, of Columbus, Ms.; son, Andrew Brislin of Bishop, Ga.;

and son,

Charles Brislin of Lawrenceville, Ga.; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul&8217;s Episcopal Church in Daphne, Alabama, on Monday, March 13 at 11:00.

Interment will be at Old Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, Alabama.

Camaelye Sheri

Courtland

Camaelye Sheri Courtland, age 25, of Selma, AL died on March 8, 2006 in Selma.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 12:00 noon at Little Elam Baptist Church with Minister T. L. Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Fulton Cemetery directed by Miller Funeral Service.

Survivors include her parents, Lula Courtland Wilson and Jessie Lewis; one godson, Quafaius Hall; one brother, Eric Courtland; a loving devoted grandmother, Reneva Satterwhite; four sisters, Tracy and Earnestine Wilson of California, Reneva Courtland and Tynesha Courtland of Selma; two nieces, Starnesha and Erica Courtland; and a devoted friend, Stacy Spivey.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jeffrey Lewis.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Rev Betty Jean Rolen

Rev Betty Jean Rolen, age 77, died Wednesday March 8, 2006 in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home Sunday March 12, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Brother Phillip B Wood III, Bro Odeen Johnson, and Rev Bernard Perry. Burial will follow at Ivy Creek Cemetery in Statesville, AL.

She is survived by her children, Edward W (Jean) Rolen of Lowndesboro, James M Rolen of Statesville, and Gail Rolen (Randy) Price of Valley Grande, grandchildren, Edward Paul Rolen of Panama City Beach, FL, Robert Fletcher (Kristi) Wyatt, Jr. of Plantersville, James Malcolm Rolen, Jr. of Statesville, Shawn Edward (Summer) Rolen of Deatsville, Leslie Margeson of Prattville, Jennifer Rolen (Brandon) Mitchell of Prattville, five great-grandchildren, and sisters, Lorraine (Sam) Brethwaite of Pine Beach, NJ, and Doris (Fred) Stone of Warminster, PA.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Earle Rolen, Jr, and her parents, William Gibson and Elizabeth Gibson.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ed Rolen, Robby Wyatt, Jim Rolen, Shawn Rolen, Brandon Mitchell, and Marty McDaniel.

Billie Pearson McLendon, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 10, 2006 at New Live Oak Cemetery with Rev. Edward Eaton officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.

Family visitation will be Friday from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rastus McLendon.

Survivors include a son, William Joseph (Buddy) (Lisa) McLendon and three daughters, Susan (Larry) Jones, Nan (David) Spivey and Ann Curtis; grandchildren, Lawrence Rogers (Jill) Jones, Jr., Kirby McLendon (Laynie) Jones, Matthew McLendon Curtis, John Thomas Curtis, Ellen Curtis (Josh) Smith, David Reid Spivey, Mary Anne Spivey, Nicole Reeves and Austin Ras McLendon; three great grandchildren, Bray O’Daniel Jones, Echols McLendon Jones and Mason Ford; and one sister, Geraldine Slayton.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest that donations can be made to Cahaba Hospice or Children’s Harbor of Alabama.
