Water board remiss in retiree pay

To the Editor:

It was very interesting to read the Water and Sewer Board’s article that was recently published in the Feb. 8, 2006, paper. Everyone appreciates their desire to do their duties in an open and above board fashion.

I would like to point out to them that in one aspect, they have been remiss. They have given their retirees only one cost of living increase in the last 16 years.

Can’t find the money for these 23 people? It is only $12,611.40. Why not do what the Selma City Council did in order to help their retirees a few years ago. Each council member gave up a portion of their discretionary funds to accommodate former city workers.

If each Water Board member would give a small part of their payments for coming to meetings, they could help these people. What I’m asking them to do is this – live simply so that others under their charge and care may simply live.
