CAMDEN – Shayla Wilson knocked down a 3-foot jumper with two seconds left in regulation to lift the Wilcox Central Lady Jaguars to a 56-54 win over the Southside Lady Panthers.
Wilcox Central held the lead until the :29 second mark of the 4th quarter when Southside’s J. Anderson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game.
“We show-ed a lot of intensity on defense early,” said Lady Jaguar coach Robin Williams. “But we missed one of our point guards who is the spark for our defense.”
WC seemed to run out of gas at the end.
Nothing is to be taken away from the Lady Panthers.
They clawed their way back from being down by as much as 15 points.
“The girls played together as a team in the second half,” said Southside coach Matthews Williams. “They also played solid defense and almost came back to win this thing.”
Southside never got untracked in the 1st quarter.
The Lady Jags led 18-5 after one quarter and 29-19 at halftime. Three pointers kept the Lady Panthers close in the 3rd quarter as they closed the gap to five by the end of the quarter.
Both offenses clicked in the 4th quarter. Though Southside out-scored WC 19-16 in the quarter, the Lady Jags hung on to get their 11th win of the season.
Heather Wilson led the Lady Jags with 14 points.
Shayla Wilson and Ashley Welch added 13 points each. Anderson finished with 14 points for the Lady Panthers, whose record falls to 9-8. Kelsey Brown chipped in 12 points.
