Four men clasped each other’s hands and stood in a circle Monday afternoon alongside Highway 80 between Southside High and the Lowndes County line.

They bowed their heads and prayed.

Behind them, the remains of a bright red Pontiac Grand Am were being loaded onto a wrecker after a horrendous traffic accident that claimed the life of a Safford Man.

The man’s identity was being withheld until family could be notified.

The man was a passenger in the car – carrying a total of five people – that slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler.

The car with Marengo County plates was destroyed and the four survivors were taken to the Vaughan Regional Medical Center.

The driver was fairly seriously injured according to Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey, but his official condition was unavailable.

The deceased was wearing a seatbelt but still died as a result of the impact, according to state police at the scene.

The Times-Journal was unable to obtain any information on the condition of the driver of the truck.
