The Alabama State Troopers at the Selma Post will be taking part in a state-wide Memorial Bike Ride on May 14 to honor troopers killed in the line of duty this past year.

Corporal Rick Ward, the Selma Post Representative, said the public is invited to join the troopers in their ride to Montgomery, where there will be a memorial service honoring fallen troopers on the steps of the state capitol.

Registration for the bike ride will take place between 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. at the Selma Post.

At around 9:30 a.m., the group will travel U.S. 80 to Montgomery, according to Ward.

“There will be t-shirts, pins and safety information. It’s going to be a big event,” Ward said.

Ward said there were 29 state troopers killed in the line of duty this past year.

“Every family will have a representative at the service in Montgomery,” Ward said.

Ward said this is the first year the state troopers have sponsored a memorial service for their officers.

“We are trying to make this an annual event,” he said.

Along with the memorial service, there will also be a street party celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Alabama State Troopers Association and the 70th anniversary of the Department of Public Safety.

Profits from the ride will be shared between the Alabama State Troopers Association Death Benefit Fund and the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, D.C.
