The Selma Saints held a one run lead after four innings of play in Friday afternoon’s game against the Carver Wolverines, but the Wolverines added seven runs in the next two innings to win 10 – 6.

“We left too many runners on base,” said Selma coach Allen Morgan, “Carver came up with the big hit and we didn’t.” The Saints left 12 runners on base in the game. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning and could only get one run across, which was on a wild pitch. They again loaded the bases in the 2nd inning, this time with one out and scored once.

Carver put the first run on the board in the opening inning on three singles. Selma came back to tie the game when John Solomon scored from third on a wild pitch. The Wolverines added another run in the 2nd, but the Saints added one of their own in the second on an RBI single off the bat of Byron Sewell to tie the game at two. Carver went back on top in the 3rd when big Reginald Stokes ripped a RBI single to left. The score remained 3 &110; 2 until the bottom of the 4th when Selma added two more runs on singles by Rod West and Solomon; and a double from Cory Washington. In the 5th the Wolverines put together two doubles, three singles, and a sacrifice fly to score four and go up 7 &110; 4. That proved to be too much for the Saints as they could only get one of those runs back in their half of the fifth when Donald Steele blasted a towering homer over the green wall’ in centerfield. Carver added three in the 6th and the Saints added one in the 7th when West scored on a single by Solomon. Line score for Carver (10 &110; 13): 10 runs, 12 hits, 3 errors, and 5 left on base. "Selma has a good team,&uot; says Carver coach Sam George, "but our team came to play tonight. We needed this game to stay in contention in the area.&uot;

Line score for Selma (7 &110; 13): 6 runs, 9 hits, two errors, 12 left on base. Solomon led the Saints with three hits, a RBI, and three stolen bases. West went three for three on 3 singles and a walk. Stokes, Andr Thomas, and Randy Thomas each had three hits for the Wolverines. Stokes also drove in three runs.
