New garbage bills coming this month

The first step in the plan to change the city’s garbage collection will take place this month with the mailing of the new garbage bills.

City Clerk Lois Williams said this month’s bills require residents to indicate which garbage pick-up services they want to receive.

On the right side of the postcard-shaped bill, just above the amount due, customers will be asked to choose between three types of services: curbside pick-up, back door pick-up, or physically unable (back door pick up at a reduced price).

Curbside pick-up will not change from the usual $12-a-month fee.

The charge for back door pick-up will be $24-a-month.

Customers who select Physically Unable will pay $12-a-mont for back door service, but must bring a doctor’s note to the Tax Collector’s Office at City Hall.

Roosevelt Goldsby, City Tax and License Director, said the first cycle of bills will be mailed on Monday.

Bills will also be mailed on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of April.

Along with the billing changes, Selma residents will have their garbage collected once a week and they will receive a garbage container.

Those who request curbside pick-up will have to place their garbage containers on the curb the evening before or morning of collection.

The containers must be removed from the curb on the same day as pick-up.

Residents will receive their garbage containers from the city at the end of April and the collection changes will take place on May 1.
