Scrappy defense kept the Morgan Academy Lady Senators in the game Tuesday as they were the home-team at Meadowview against Lee-Scott.
In the first half of a double header featuring three teams, the Lady Warriors took the 6-3 lead despite some scrappy defense from Morgan.
“I thought we played good defense and that’s really our (strength),” coach Rick Blevins said. “We don’t hit the ball well, we’re not a good hitting team.
Every time we get base runners we’ve got to take advantage and we didn’t do that today.”
Despite having only four hits, the Lady Senators had plenty of base runners against Lee-Scott as they drew eight walks in the game.
Morgan took the lead in the first inning as Elizabeth Watters led off with a single.
Laura-Whitney Bennett reached on an error.
After a pair of outs, Lindsey Vice walked and Anne Larkin Oaks helped her own cause with a hit.
Lee-Scott answered with a pair of unearned runs in the second as a trio of errors hurt the Morgan cause.
Two more errors in the third helped the Lady Warriors push three more runs across.
But, after that, the Morgan defense shored up the holes.
Three times they allowed runners into scoring position with no outs, only to rebound and keep the Lady Warriors from scoring.
Morgan picked up a run in the third when Courtney Hicks walked and moved up on a fielder’s choice.
She later came around to score.
A walk and an error allowed Lee-Scott to get an insurance run in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
For Morgan, Oaks went the distance on the hill. She allowed just four hits and walked four.
At the plate, Watters had a single and scored.
Lindsey Vice added a single. Oaks walked once and singled.
Kayla Pegues and Claire Wilkinson each walked twice.
