Selma’s own local band is ready to land a major record deal and they’ve got a solid plan for it.

Laylines, an area rock band, has already gone on regional and state tours. But with the release of a new compilation of songs for college radio, they’re ready to break out.

The group is featured on the Shut Eye Records album, “Buzzlighter #9.” The disc is being distributed to more than 300 college radio stations around the country. It features bands like Midnight Oil and White Light Motorcade.

Laylines already has a demo album out, and it’s available to download free on their Web site, www.laylinesmusic.com.

The trio of songs is a modern mix of rock songs with solid melodies and catchy lyrics.

The band’s latest release was highlighted in a recent issue of City Magazine out of Tuscaloosa.

“Laylines’ strength lies in knowing when to hold back, rather than just laying everything out on the table,” the review said.

The band’s LP was given a higher rating than Green Day’s latest by the magazine.

Currently, the band is being played by several major radio stations in the region, including Z100.5, Tuscaloosa; 107.7 The X, Birmingham; and 95.1 The Fox, Montgomery.

As far as the group is concerned, it’s just being a successful rock band.

“I don’t think any band from Selma has ever had a record label scouting them,” band member Greg Brown said. “That is pretty significant.”

As a result of their ambition, the band possesses a relentless drive to promote and reach out to potential audience members.

“That’s how you get signed,” Brown said.

Still, the band’s quest isn’t over.

“I think people need to know there is a (rock) band from Selma gaining success,” Brown said. “We not only play around the Southeast, but represent Selma. We will be playing City Stages in Birmingham and Jubilee in Montgomery. That’s big.”

Laylines’ last show was held at the 1048 club in Montgomery. For more show updates, or information, go to www.laylinesmusic.com.
