The Morgan Academy defense recorded two of its four interceptions in the final five minutes as the Senators handed host Mobile Christian a 21-14 loss Friday night.

The win was the fifth straight for the Senators (5-1) while Mobile Christian (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season.

Trailing 14-13, Morgan Academy took the lead for good when Josh McAteer fielded a kickoff and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Jeremy Smith ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the Senators a 21-14 lead with just over seven minutes to go.

Mobile Christian threatened to regain the lead when it drove inside the Morgan Academy 10-yard line with five minutes remaining.

But McAteer thwarted the threat when he picked off a pass at the Senators’ 1-yard line.

Mobile Christian once again had the opportunity to score the game-winning touchdown late in the game. The hosts drove to the Morgan Academy 45, but saw any rally hopes end when Will Summerlin came up with one of his two picks on the night with 1:58 to go.

The Morgan Academy offense ran out the clock from there.

Along with his interception, McAteer also did the job on offense. His 65-yard scoring run with 8:13 left in the first quarter gave the Senators a 7-0 lead. Smith added the PAT.

After Mobile Christian had taken an 8-7 lead early in the second period, McAteer answered with a 32-yard touchdown run that put the Senators back in front, 13-8.

MC took a 14-13 lead early in the third period before McAteer’s return.

Morgan Academy will go for its sixth straight win next Friday when it travels to Monroe Academy.
