Williams rambles to win

The Vols got a super-human effort from Monroe Academy running back Bonner Williams Friday night.

Behind Williams, Monroe downed defending 2-A AISA state champion Wilcox Academy, 30-24.

On his home field, Williams rambled for 351 yards and four touchdowns in the winning effort on 26 carries.

Sam Mosley led the Wildcats with 150 yards.

Quarterback Phillip Merryman ran for 107 yards on 17 attempts.

Coach Chris Burford’s Wilcox bunch came out strong and took a 16-3 lead in the first half.

After a field goal from Monroe, Wilcox went to work.

Mosley scored on a short touchdown romp. Chase Felts broke an 82-yard punt return for a score to give the visitors a 16-3 lead.

Williams found a crease and exploded for a 39-yard touchdown run, but the PAT failed.

Later Williams rolled for an 81-yard touchdown.

The PAT made it 16 all at the half.

The teams didn’t score again until the fourth quarter when Merryman punched it in from 30 yards out.

The two-point conversion made it 24-16.

Williams scored again. Then finally iced the game with his final touchdown of the night. Monroe finished with 399 yards on the ground, none in the air.

Merryman threw for 31 yards for Wilcox.
