Bessie Johnson Brown

Bessie Johnson Brown, 49, of Autaugaville, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at a healthcare facility.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Mallard Chapel with the Rev. Curry officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include her husband, William Brown; parents, Bob and Lefonnia Steele; one daughter, Talleta Steele; five brothers, William (Yvonne) Steele, Arthur (Linda) Steele, Ross Steele and Lee Kennie (Antoinette); two sisters, Georgia (Maurice) Perry and Annette Steele; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews; one goddaughter, Ruth Oden; a devoted cousin, Barbara Motley.

Active pallbearers are classmates.

RC Lee

RC Lee, 52, of Selma, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at his home.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Chapel of Lewis Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. Joshua Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Gate Cemetery in Farmersville, with Lewis Brothers Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include four brothers, Clarence (LaVaugh) Lee of Calif., Elgie (Janice) Lee of Lowndes County, Robert Lee of Selma and Charlie Lee of Florida; three sisters, Ora Thomas and Dottie Davis of Selma and Cassie Lee of Calif.; two sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gertrude Robinson

Gertrude Robinson, 65, of Montgomery, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at a nursing home in Montgomery.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Free Will Holiness Church with Jerry Holman officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with J.H. Williams and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include three sons, Ernest Robinson of Milwaukee, Wis., Bruce W. Robinson and Carl A. Wiley of Anchorage, Alas.; daughter, Winona Robinson Marshall of Milwaukee, Wis.; aunt, Mary E. Jones of Detroit, Mich.; two sisters, Magdalene R. Davis of Selma and Mary B. Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandsons, Joseph, James, Jonte and Jaminah Marshall and Christopher Robins-Norfleet; three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lacey Robinson, one daughter and one sister .

Beatrice W. Turner

Beatrice W. Turner, 78, of Selma, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at a local nursing home.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Mt. Hebron West Baptist Cemetery in North Elmore County with the Rev. Al Finch officiating and Selma Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include son, Ben (Debbie) Turner of Selma; daughter, Jennie Dennis of Selma; four grandchildren, Jeremy Turner, Brett Turner, Holley Dennis and Austin Dennis all of Selma; and two sisters, Lorna McCall of Snead and Esther Barrett of Wetumpka.

Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Henry Turner.

Family visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. at Selma Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers are Ben Turner, Brett Turner, Jeremy Turner, Austin Dennis, Judson Barrett and Wayne Lockhart.

Leslie Rudolph

Leslie “Big Joe Lewis” Rudolph, 67, of Hayneville, died Saturday, July 24, 2004.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at St. Paul CME Church with the Rev. Longshore officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Betty Lou Gentry McCain

Betty Lou Gentry McCain, 64, of South Carolina, formerly of Talladega County, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Jackson’s Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Petty Funeral Home of South Carolina directing.

Survivors include her son, James M. McCain III of Brooke, Va.; daughter, Cynthia Joy McCain of Tacoma, Wash.; her twin sister, Bobbie Sue Gentry Burcham of Prattville; granddaughter, Destiney M. Feaster; and great-grandson, Conner Feaster of Spotsylvania, Va.; several nieces and nephews, and loving brother and sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James M. McCain Jr.

Family visitation will be held at the church following the burial.

Memorials may be made to the McCain Family Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 339, Landrum, SC 29356.

Mrs. McCain was the daughter of the late Walter Lee and Vidaoar Smith Gentry. She was a member of Jackson’s Grove United Church, and was a creative homemaker. She spent 29 years doing the hardest job in the Navy, a Navy chaplain’s wife.

Ethel Mae McCall

Ethel Mae McCall, 93, of Birmingham, died Sunday, July 25, 2004.

Services are at 12 noon, Saturday, July 31, at the Chapel of Bell Funeral Home with the Rev. John E. James officiating. Burial will follow in the James Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home.

Joe L. Searight

Joe L. Searight, 37, of Ft. Deposit, died Saturday, July 24, 2004.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Ft. Deposit Municipal Complex with Apostle S.B. Littler officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Cemetery with Bell Funeral Home directing.

Flora J. Nichols

Flora J. Nichols, 69, of Selma, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at her home.

Services are at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Fancher officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include a devoted companion, Ricky Moore; mother, Hattie Thorn; sons, Phillip (Brenda) Higginbotham, Ben (Aleyda) Higginbotham and Randy (Gayle) Higginbotham; daughter, Debra (James) Smith; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers are Butch Huffman, David Rinehart, Micky Patterson, Bob Cook, Pete Nichols and Roger Nichols.
