Finals next for 15-16 All-Stars

THOMASVILLE – The Selma 15-16 Dixie Majors scored nine runs in the second inning Tuesday to beat Arab, 9-4, in the semifinals of the Sub-State Baseball Tournament.

Selma will face an

unbeaten Auburn University-Montgomery squad in the finals of the double-elimination tournament today at 5:30 p.m.

A loss would send the Selma All-Stars home and give the title to AUM. If Selma wins the opening game, the two teams will play a second and deciding game immediately after the first contest.

Zack Hughey pitched three innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked one and struck out three.

Andrew Harrison pitched three innings of relief, surrendering one run. Cody Massey pitched a perfect seventh inning to close out the win.

“We’ve got extraordinary pitching,” said Selma head coach Robert Massey, who also announced that Harrison would start the first game today for Selma.

Massey added that all his pitchers would see action on the mound if Selma forced a deciding second game.

Trailing 2-0, the Selma All-Stars exploded on Arab for a huge nine-run second inning.

Blake South and Jacob paxton walked to open the frame. Shane Moreland followed with a single to load the bases.

McAteer’s single scored South to cut the margin to 2-1. Cody Massey then walked to force in paxton and tie the game.

Hughey bounced into a fielder’s choice to retire Moreland at the plate. But McAteer tallied the go-ahead run when the Arab catcher’s throw to first base sailed into right field.

After Ben Callaway walked to reload the bases, John Solomon singled in Massey. Tyler Hollis walked to score Hughey.

Paxton, the 11th batter of the inning, cleared the bases with a triple. he scored on a single by Moreland.
