Lady Saints shine in Troy tourney

Coach Anthony Harris and his 12 returning players plus a new addition, last year’s final four team, the Selma High Lady Saints, participated in Troy State University Women Summer Camp, June 25-27.
The camp included 30 teams from around the state and the southeast.
Gabrielle Goudy, the outstanding student-athlete from Selma CHAT Academy, was baptized in the spirit of the Lady Saints as she made her debut.
With four returning starters, Shemeka Simpson, Ashley Green, Erica Lumpkin, and Santana Seay, the Lady Saints were defeated in the first game by the number four preseason ranked Vestavia Hills, 48-23.
Selma got on the winning track and creamed Niceville 39-27 in the second game.
To improve their Friday record to 2-1 in the third game, the Lady Saints beat Star Mill High 39-27. With a good night sleep the well-rested Lady Saints dominated Springville High 40-18.
In the fifth game, Charles Henderson High couldn’t match up with the Lady Saints and lost 36-19. Baldwin County was then demolished by Selma 51-11. In the seventh game, the Lady Saints cruised to a 60-27 win over Laurel High. In the final game of Saturday, the Lady Saints began to click and beat Northview High of Dothan 42-7 to finish the two days with a 7-1 record. Sunday afternoon was tournament time and the Lady Saints received a bye. They then defeated Springville, 36-12 and Star Mills, 36-24. In the championship game, the Lady Saints faced Vestavia Hills of Birmingham who had beaten them by 25 on Friday. Before the game, Vestavia Hills spent their time taking pictures while the the Lady Saints were warming-up. Selma jumped out to an 8-1 lead, and at halftime, the Lady Saints led by 15. The Lady Saints won the tournament with the 41-35 win.
“My players showed a lot of heart, but they need a lot of work,” Harris said.
