Youth arrested after SPD standoff

Police arrested a 16-year-old Selma boy after the youth allegedly held the SPD at bay with a revolver for half an hour.

Police say the youth argued with his mother earlier. The situation got out of hand and she called the police.

When officers arrived she exited their home on Ruth Street. At least one shot was fired as she left the building.

Police immediately transported the woman to safety and secured the area.

“Of course we got her out of the danger zone,” Police Chief Robert Green said.

Officers closed off the street and at least one officer was observed with a drawn pistol near the entrance to the residence. Officers attempted to contact the youth several times on the phone. When the young man’s father,

he attempted to contact him as well.

“We kept calling, (he’d) hang up. His father called, he’d hang up,” Green said.

A K-9 officer spotted the young man fleeing from a side door. An officer pursued the youth on foot and caught him two houses down.

The weapon was retrieved from his own back yard.

Police took the youth into custody. Green said the police would contact juvenile facilities in Hale County as well as probation services.
