Evans Jackson Fuzzell Sr.

Evans Jackson “Jack” Fuzzell Sr., 81, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, died May 21 at the Veterans Hospital in Washington, D.C. Graveside services with full military honors were held Friday, May 27 at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga.

Mr. Fuzzell was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a native of Selma and a graduate of Parrish High School Class of 1941.

His wife, the former Carolyn Johnson also of Selma, died in 1997. Their son Evans Jackson Fuzzell Jr. died in 1985.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law,

Margaret and Howard Ralston of Dalton, Ga., and Lillian and John Rovka of York, Penn.; his son and daughter-in-law Frank and Lois Fuzzell of Leesburg, Fla; his sister Mary Frances White and brother Joe Edwin Fuzzell, both of Florida.

He is also survived by grandchildren Ryan Howard Ralston of Dalton, Alicia Ford of Florida, Diane Corcoran of Pennsylvania; David M. Rovka of Missouri and Priscilla Martinez Fuzzell of California.

Other survivor include great-grandchildren Talon Rovka, Keeton Rovka, Taylor Corcoran and Austin Ford and several nieces and nephews.

George “Cap” Swift of Selma was his brother-in-law.

Eunice Dale Bickerstaff

Eunice Dale Bickerstaff, 81, of Lawley died Saturday, June 5, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 7, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove No. 2 Church. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 6, from 5-7 p.m.

Mr. Bickerstaff was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Bickerstaff, son Delton Bickerstaff and daughter Martha McLendon.

He is survived

by daughters Judy Boughner of Altoona, Jean Mapes of Huntsville, Linda Burton of Selma, Sally McMillan of Brent, Kathleen Cobb of Hayneville, Juanita Courtney of Lawley and Janet Sims of Lawley; brother Otha Bickerstaff of Altoona; granddaughter Stephanie Johnson of Lawley; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joe Brislin Gates

Joe Brislin Gates, 80, a resident of Minter, died Friday, June 4, at his residence. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home, with Rev. Elwood Sims and Rev. Eddie Gillenwater officiating. Burial will be in Braggs Cemetery with Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Gates was survived by wife Cad “Sugar Pie” Gates of Fosteria, sons Joe Henry Gates (Patsy) of Tyson, George “Mack” Junior McKinley (Lynn) of Montgomery, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, sisters Robbie Richardson (Jim) of Katherine and Emma Richards of Montgomery.

Active pallbearers include Jimmy Davis, Ross Godwin, Joe Small, Richard Lang, Tillman Simmons and Bobby Gates.

Honorary pallbearers include Sam Cooper, Josh Gray, Ted Bozeman, Dr. Overstreet, John Strickland Sr., Jimmy Sharpe, John Killough, Sam Tompkins and Will Frank Autrey.
