Marguerite Nelson Chance

Marguerite Nelson Chance, 80, of Selma, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at a local nursing home.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Finch officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include son, Lamar (Sarah) Chance; daughters, Margaret Ann (James Ray) Strickland and Mary Alice (Ben) Bender; brother, James (Carolyn) Nelson; sister, Lois (Allen) Huggins.

Active pallbearers are James Nelson, Lamar Griffin, Dwayne Bender, Jamie Bender, Landry Strickland and Mike Jones.

Jane Ware Smyly

Jane Ware Smyly, 74, of Selma, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at a local nursing home.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Chapel of Selma Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Chappelle officiating assisted by the Rev. Tom Lloyd

and the Rev. Brian Erickson. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Selma

Funeral Home directing and the Rev. George Jones officiating.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Steve Erickson, Beverly and Tom Lloyd all of Birmingham and Sybil and Stevie Smitherman of Valley Grande; grandchildren, Brian and Mollie Erickson, Beth Erickson, Brad Erickson, Brooke Erickson, Rachael Lloyd, Michael Lloyd, Melissa Smitherman, Ross and Katie Smitherman, Kennedy (Smitherman) and Ryan Bergeron; great-grandchildren, Hunter Roberts and Henry Erickson. She was looking forward to the birth of her third great-grandchild later this month.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Rhoades Smyly Jr. and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ware Jr.

Brian Erickson, Brad Erickson, Michael Lloyd, Ross Smitherman, Ryan Bergeron and Steve Neighbors.

Honorary pallbearers are Allen Bearden, James Bearden, Ross Bearden, Pete Brown, Ken Hopkins, Marc Ivey, Pete Roberts, Gerry Rush, James Smitherman and Russell Williams.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Valley Grande Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smyly served as church secretary at Central Baptist Church for 44 years. Her years of services afforded her the opportunity to work with many pastors, music directors and staff, who al had a special place in her heart.

Cleveland Allen

Cleveland Allen, 81, of Demopolis, died recently at a Tuscaloosa hospital.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at St. Paul Baptist Church in Demopolis, with the Rev. Charlie Moore officiating and Larkin and Scott Funeral Home directing.

The body will lie in state at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m.

Lewey D. McBride

Lewey D. McBride, 87, of Gulfport, Miss., formerly of Selma, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at a Gulfport hospital.

Services are at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Britton officiating. Burial will follow in New Live Oak Cemetery with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include children, Lewey D. McBride Jr. of Louisa, Va., Milton Wallace (Sandi) McBride of Chesterfield, S.C., Betty Joe (Jack Jr.) Davis of Gulfport, Miss., Ginger Ann McBride of Daphne and Kathryn M. (Richard) Russell of Minter; brothers, DD (Thera) McBride of Dothan and Desmond G. McBride of Westhampton, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Sealy McBride, his parents, Hiram Wallace McBride Sr. and Ethel Z. Hathcock McBride, three brothers, Sentiff Charles McBride, James Grimes McBride and Hiram Wallace McBride Jr. and a sister, Dorothy McBride Busby.

Active pallbearers are Joseph R. Hayes, Michael J. Andrus, Jesse L. Crosby III, Bradford C. Fondren, Michael McBride, Lewey D. McBride III.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, at Lawrence Funeral Home.

Jim Mims

Jim Mims, 91, of Montgomery, formerly of Selma, died Monday, May 24, 2004.

Services are at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 26, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. George Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Memory Gardens with Lawrence Funeral Home directing.

Survivors include his sons, James Ralph Mims and Perry Donald Mims both of Montgomery; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers are James Ralph Mims, Jr., Kevin Mims, Jerry Mims, Robert Mozingo, Jr., Tom Carr and Christopher Mims.

Mr. Mims was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Trawick Mims and one son, Jimmy Larry Mims.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, at Lawrence Funeral Home.
