Summer will be fun at the Arts Center

The Performing Arts Centre will have a lot going on to keep Selmians busy this summer.

For moviegoers:

An early highlight will be “Lunch and a Sunday Matinee” set for Sunday, June 13. The event is being sponsored by the Performing Arts Centre and the Selma Arts Council. A catered lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the charming movie

classic – “Gigi,” starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jordan

– will begin at 1:30 p.m. The luncheon will be catered by Joyce’s Catering. Tickets for the luncheon and movie are $15 and must be purchased by June 9 from the Performing Arts Centre weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The cost of the movie alone is $1 and advance purchase is not necessary. For information call the Performing Arts Centre at (334) 874-2145 or the Selma Arts Council at 874-2177.

Movies for Seniors, sponsored by the Performing Arts Centre and Downtown Selma Association, continue each Tuesday at 2 p.m. Suggested donation of $1 for admission pays for the movie and free popcorn and a cold drink. Monthly schedules are posted at the Performing Arts Centre.

Wednesday Movies for the community –

especially

children and youth – begin Wednesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. The series is sponsored by the Performing Arts Centre and Downtown Selma Association. Monthly schedules are posted at the Performing Arts Centre. Suggested donation is $1 per person.

For art lovers:

June 1-30 the Performing Arts Centre will feature works of art created by

members of the Selma Art Guild.

July 1-31 the works of local artist Robert Baynes will be on exhibit.

During the month of August members of the Selma Art Guild will exhibit art in conjunction with Encore!’s annual summer musical, Aug. 5-7. This year’s production will be “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

Encore! auditions for the production will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, May 24-25 and 27 at the theatre in the Centre at 7 p.m. Rehearsals will begin Monday, June 7.

For children:

a children’s musical

of American songs, for children “potty trained and up,” will be presented. All children will be included. Rehearsals

will be held weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning June 10. The show will be directed by Cheryl Treese. The cost per child is $50. For information, call the Performing Arts Centre, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 874-2145.

For children, at the Dallas Academy building:

The City of Selma Ceramic Art Program, in cooperation with Alabama State Councilon

the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts and Selma Arts Council, is sponsoring Art Camp 2004 for ages 8 and up in two one-week sessions. Activities include ceramics,

pottery, batik, gyotaku fish prints, Inka loom weaving, macrame, watercolor, marbling, paper making, stained glass mosaic, calligraphy, etching, spooling, print making, culinary and domestic arts, wire art and construction. Cost: $100 (non-refundable). Scholarships are offered. Dates: Camp One – June 7-11; Camp Two – July 12-16; Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
