Tuck said that this year’s goal is $65,000.

There are approximately 50 teams from all over the community coming together to reach the goal.

Karl Jones, event chairman, said, &uot;I hope we reach $100,000. Cancer has affected my family. Everyone I know has been affected in some way – a family member, a friend, or even themselves. Cancer is no respecter of persons, so we have a lot of great people in this community who are coming together to fight back against this disease.&uot;

Logistics chairman, Sheriff Harris Huffman, said, &uot;This is more teams than we have ever had at the event. Finding ways to create more room is a good problem to have. But it will be no problem at all to accommodate everyone.&uot;

This year’s relay also has more sponsors than ever. Tuck said Rayco Industrial Inc., Selma Funeral Home and Highland Avenue BP are event sponsors, supporting overall costs. Other sponsors, who support specific activities,

include Moore Stewart Ford/Honda – entertainment; International Paper – Luminary sponsor; Montgomery Cancer Center Selma – survivor reception sponsor; and Alabama Power – children’s activities sponsor. Selma Rental is also assisting in children’s activities, Vaughan Regional Medical Center

in educational activities; and the Lion’s Club as track sponsor. Many local businesses have donated items to assist with the event as well, she said.

Tuck has watched the steady growth of the event since 1995 when it began here. She is equally excited by the strides made against cancer year by year.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to attend the Cancer Survivors Reception May 7, from 5-6 p.m. at the Lion’s Club Park Pavilion. Survivors desiring to participate in fund raising with the Cancer Survivors Team may sign in at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library or the Centre for Commerce. A member envelope and donor sheet is available at each location.
