A Wednesday afternoon fire on Washington Street destroyed several pieces of furniture, but injured no one.

According to Andy Dearman, Selma Fire Department battalion chief, his department got the call to 1607 Washington St. at 3:09 p.m. The first fire engine reached the home at 3:11 p.m.

Fire fighters brought the blaze under control in about five minutes.

“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point,” Dearman said.

Dearman added that the home was a duplex. The fire began on one side of the home and caused major damage. The other side of the home only received smoke damage.

Once fire fighters contained the fire, they began their “salvage and overhaul” procedure. Fire fighters salvaged any items that might be saved by removing them from the home and covering them from the rain.

They overhauled the home by ensuring no hot spots or enclosed fires still existed. Dearman said that fires sometimes are sometimes found in closets or behind walls. Furniture with vinyl is removed from a fire because it will smoke and fires can be caught beneath the cushions.

Once the fire department completed its salvage and overhaul procedure, Dearman said it would attempt to find the fire’s cause. The home would then be handed over to the owners.
