Selma star guard Brandon Davis drew three fouls in the first quarter Friday night on the road at Prattville, so Mr. Defense, Randall ‘Pete’ Rutledge took his game to another level.
Rutledge provided the Saints a spark as they put a scare into the hometown Lions before falling 49-47.
For most of the night, the Saints were stuck in a 5-point deficit.
Then, late in the game, Jeremy Carter made a play. Carter stole the ball and found Rutledge for a lay up with 6:55 left in the game.
Prattville’s Daniel White came down and hit a rainbow 3-pointer to put the Lions up 39-35.
Rutledge pushed the ball up court and fed Carter for a bucket.
With just over a minute left, Rutledge hit a jumper that cut the lead to 39-38.
However, the Saints couldn’t take the lead. Prattville kept up the pace and held off the Saints for the two-point win.
With the loss, Selma fell to 4-2 on the season.
In JV action, the Saints downed Prattville 42-36.
Quinn Parnell had an all around good game.
He did everything but drive the bus home.
Parnell finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, a block and a steal.
Cajun Pritchett had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
James Furlow had 8 points.
Coach Turner’s JV squad is 5-0 on the season.
