Today is the day when those heading out-of-town for Thanksgiving start to pack up their things and hit the open road.

Before you head off for the annual visit with friends or relatives, the Selma Police Department has a few suggestions it would like you to consider.

Selma Police Chief Robert Green said a house that looks empty is an ideal target for thieves, so it is important to at least have the appearance that someone is home.

Green says it is a good idea to have a relative or neighbor pick up all the mail and newspapers.

The police chief also suggests that people not leave messages on their voice mail or answering machines announcing they are out-of-town or when they will return.

With traffic likely to be heavy on all major roadways for the holidays, there are a few simple tasks that can be done to ensure a safe journey.

Green said those planning to make a long drive should check the tires and leave town on a full tank of gas.

If getting an early start or long periods of driving cause motorists to feel tired, Green’s advice is to take proper action and avoid the risk of falling asleep behind the wheel.

This is the time of year when motorists need to be on the look out for deer. Caution should be used when driving through a deer habitat, Green said, especially on rural two-lane roads.

Green said deer are most actively looking for food during dawn and dusk, and will often look near the roadways.

Finally, Green said motorists should not drink and drive. If someone is going to drink at a party, they should get a designated driver.

Green said the Selma Police Department would like to extend their best wishes to all citizens of Selma this Thanksgiving.
