Lady Trojans get win

Haley McIntyre scored half of her points from the charity stripe as Meadowview’s Lady Trojans opened the Pepsi-Cola Marion Academy Thanksgiving Tournament with a 43-37 win over Morgan Monday night in Marion.

McIntyre finished with 24 points to lead all scorers in the game. She also had 12 rebounds.

“That’s the first time we’ve beaten Morgan in a long time,” Meadowview coach Mike Cassebaum said.

Ashton Smith added 10 points and 7 rebounds for the Lady Trojans.

Elyse McIntyre added 6 points and 7 assists.

Joni Lawrence had 3 points to finish out Morgan scoring.

“Morgan played a super game,” Cassebaum said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game.

We just played with a lot of heart.”

For Morgan, Katie Taylor led the charge with 11 points.

Candace Ward added 8 and Claire Wilkerson had 7.

Laura Whitney Bennett scored 5 and Ginger Gaines, Elizabeth Elliott and Caroline Wood had 2 points each.

Morgan fell to 0-1 on the season but coach Rick Blevins was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I thought for the first game of the year, we played really good defense,” Blevins said. “I thought we got the shots we needed to take.

We did a lot of good things.”

Both teams started off slowly and behind 4 points from Smith and 3 from H. McIntyre, Meadowview had a 7-3 lead.

The pace picked up some in the second quarter.

Ward bombed home a pair of trifectas for the Lady Senators and Morgan out-scored Meadowview 10-8 in the second quarter.

Morgan trailed 15-13 at the midway break.

The Lady Trojans’ offense picked up the pace in the third quarter.

E. McIntyre banged home a three and Lawrence added a long ball to increase the Meadowview lead.

After three quarters, Morgan trailed 29-21.

Morgan rallied for 10 points in the final quarter.

Wilkerson had 5 of those.

McIntyre closed the fourth quarter with 9 points to help the Lady Trojans seal the deal.
