To call the Calhoun Foods Back to School Fest a success would be an understatement. Organizers estimate that more people attended this year’s event than all the previous ones combined.

In one hour, Calhoun Food employees gave away nearly 5,000 bags of free school supplies to children in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade.

Along with supplies, winners of some games received prizes such as towels, mats, book bags, gift certificates for free hair cuts, and even new school uniforms.

Those who attended the event on Saturday left with big smiles on their faces, especially the young children.

Organizers said they were impressed with the way so many teachers came out to help and show their support.

Phyllis Pierce, co-manager of Calhoun Foods, said the biggest thrill for her was to see the looks on the children’s faces.
