Need a guide for the Martin Luther King Jr. walking trail? Come August 6 one will be available.
An office for the Friends of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail Association is scheduled to open August 6 &045;&045; the anniversary of when the voting rights act was signed. Its open house is planned for 3 – 5 p.m.
The office, located at 816 Selma Ave. suite No. 2, will provide a number of services including historical data bank collection and a youth history lab which will provide research opportunities to youth interested in people, places and events leading up to the voting rights movement.
And, of course, free walking tours.
Price noted that the Friends’ office will be near the Center for Commerce. Center visitors interested in the Martin Luther King Jr. walking tour could quickly be matched with a Friends’ staff member acting as a guide.
According to Price, the Friends have a post office box and web site, but no physical address. The opening of the 816 Selma Ave. office will change that. The office is needed because the Friends need a location to store information.
Also, the Friends need an office so they can field phone calls.
The office was occupied by The United Way until spring 2003. The Friends contacted the City of Selma, the owners of the site, shortly afterwards concerning using the space for their office.
