With summer in full swing and the weather heating up, many families have started looking for ways to spend quality time together without having to spend a lot of money.

There are many places around Selma that offer activities both parents and children can enjoy with little or no cost.

The Selma-Dallas County Public Library, for instance, offers free programs all summer long for families who need a break from the sun.

The latest activity begins today at 10 a.m. with &uot;Music with Mr. Gordon.&uot;

Gordon Welch will be spending the afternoon at the library teaching people of all ages different songs and using simple musical instruments.

There is an 11 a.m. class set aside for large groups, but Reed said there will be another session for the public starting at 2 p.m.

If parents miss out on this music session, there will more for them to join in a few weeks.

The Selma Recreation Department’s Ceramic Program is another great place for families to hang out together and be creative at the same time.

The Ceramic Program is located on the bottom floor of the Dallas Academy Building on the corner of Selma Avenue and Church Street.

With only a $15 enrollment fee, the ceramic program offers parents and children an opportunity to work on a variety of projects.

The ceramic classes are held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and on Thursdays from 7-10 p.m.

Unlike some other programs, the ceramic classes are held year-round.

The local YMCA also has plenty to offer families on budget who are looking for something to do.

Enrollment is a little more costly than the others, but the YMCA offers a wide range of services and activities. Parents can exercise and swim knowing their children are in a safe environment.

The YMCA also has plenty of sporting activities for children and teens to get involved in over the summer.

With so many programs and activities happening this summer, being bored is one option parents will never have to worry about.
