Selma’s Interim City Clerk has tendered her resignation. The City Council, though, hasn’t accepted it.

During a discussion of filling the city clerk position at the council’s Thursday work session, Councilwoman Nancy Sewell said Interim City Clerk/Treasurer Sequita Oliver submitted her resignation letter for her city clerk duties. Oliver told Sewell she was recruited for finance work.

Oliver turned the letter in more than a month ago, according to President George Evans.

The council, however, hasn’t acted on the letter and didn’t officially accept Oliver’s resignation, according to Evans.

Evans opened discussion on the position of city clerk as the first business item on the agenda Thursday night, and Councilman B.L. Tucker began by saying he thought the council needed to act on it at Monday’s meeting.

Tucker also presented a letter from Mayor James Perkins Jr. that was sent to all council members concerning the appointment.

Evans said the issue would be addressed Monday.

Sewell proposed Secretary Lois Williams be appointed interim city clerk and Oliver appointed interim city treasurer.

Councilman James Durry said the council had been mulling over what to do about the empty position for some time, and suggested political reasons for the delay.

Political motivations needed to be set aside, and instead the council should focus on the good of the city.

Nunn also said the next step would be the Court of Civil Appeals if the motion failed.

Councilwoman Rita Sims Franklin, though, said only one forum should be held.

Crenshaw, however, said in the past the situation was dealt with by a card detailing a new voting location if a ward had changed.
