This Friday a basketball tournament will be held at the Wallace State Community College, Selma gymnasium. The players are pumped up, excited and ready for action.
The teams in the tournament are not typical, but they are still good at basketball. The event is part of the Special Olympics, in which every player is disabled in some way.
At this year’s tournament, six teams will be participating: the Cahaba Center Male and Female teams, the center’s female staff, the Dothan Mental Health Center, McGinnis School from Montgomery, and Cahaba Place.
The games will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m. There will be 10 players per team, with 2 trainers.
In preparation for the big event, the teams have been practicing for two months at the local YMCA.
First and second place individual awards will be given to each team after the tournament.
The Cahaba Center is required to play three games before advancing on to the state tournament this March in Montgomery. No matter if they win first or second place, all of the Special Olympics teams will get to make the trip.
After the state tournament, the Cahaba Center will be gearing up for Special Olympics teams in track and field and softball.
