Meadowview dedicates gym

The first time Claude Holbrook tried to step down from the board of directors at Meadowview Christian School, his letter of resignation was rejected. Unanimously.

But 33 years was long enough, Holbrook insisted. It was time for him to step down, time to give someone else the opportunity to serve. He tendered a second letter of resignation. The board reluctantly accepted.

Thursday night, prior to the start of its game with Greenville Academy, the parents, faculty and students at Meadowview indicated just how much they valued Holbrook’s contributions over the years by officially naming the school gym the Claude Holbrook Gymnasium.

Never one to seek the spotlight, Holbrook at first demurred at even this gesture of appreciation.

Holbrook was one of the original board members at Meadowview and has served continuously ever since. Not only has he given selflessly of his time and energy, according to Morgan, he has given in material ways as well.

When the school needed some concrete poured earlier this year, Holbrook, who owns Holbrook Ready-Mix Concrete, donated 45 to 50 yards worth. Just like that. If some of the students came up a little short for a school-sponsored trip, Holbrook often reached down into his own pocket and made up the difference. When the school counselor needed a copier that the budget didn’t allow for, Holbrook made the purchase himself.

As a school administrator, Morgan said he will miss Holbrook’s counsel and advice. &uot;A person like that is so multi-talented, he’s irreplaceable,&uot; Morgan said. &uot;I know my job will be a lot tougher with him gone.&uot;

Oh, and when the board voted to name the gym after Holbrook, that vote was unanimous also.
