You might need to hurry to some local stores before the hottest items sell out.

According to Joseph Bearden, owner of Meyer’s Shoes, handbags, ladies’ boots and hats have all sold well this holiday shopping season.

“Handbags in general have been real good,” Bearden said.

Judy Newberry, salesperson, said that both the Merrell Jungle Moc Shoe and the Clarks Wallabees have been very popular this season.

Bearden added that the Clarks shoes weren’t even available last year. The Clarks that are in his store now were purchased in February of this year, he said.

Bearden said both Friday and Saturday morning were busy, but that around mid-afternoon it started to slow down.

Still, Bearden said that the holiday shopping season was better this year than the last, and added that business expectations were met for the month of November.

Stores out on Highland Avenue are also did a brisk trade during the weekend.

Louise Harvilly, cashier in the layaway department of Wal-Mart, said that the line for her department on Friday extended all the way to the automotive area. That’s close to 100 feet.

The line began at 6 in the morning, Harvilly said, and didn’t start to slack up until 2:30 that afternoon.

Harvilly said that in her department Playstations, pool tables, and trampolines are all popular.

One Wal-Mart employee wheeled out a Riot bicycle made by Next. According to him, it is another hot item this holiday season.

Harvilly said that 27-inch televisions were so popular that all of them have already either been sold or are on layaway.

Harvilly said that she thought this shopping season was busier than last year’s.

Across the road at McRae’s, Sherise Wright, cashier in the men’s department, agreed.

Cassandra Sallie, cashier, said that many people want what’s on sale or ask when items will be on sale.

Sallie said that Tommy Hilfiger jeans have been a popular item this season.

In the fine jewelry department, three diamond past, present, future pieces have been the hot item, said Leona Curtis, fine jewelry supervisor.

Curtis also said that business was doing well over the holiday weekend.

“It was slow this morning, but picked up this evening,” she said.
